Gun storage and children question?

Postby JeremiahMN on Thu Apr 14, 2011 3:39 pm

I have a couple of pistols and keep those locked in a safe. I've also just purchased a new rifle but my safe isn't big enough to put it in there. I was at fleet farm buying this and noticed a sign that says it's illegal to have guns where kids can get to them. So if I have a trigger gaurd on this thing, and will keep the ammo locked up in my safe, that should be good to go, right? Or since I have a kid, does it need to be locked in a safe?

I'm planning on keeping it with the trigger lock on it, in the case on the top shelf in my room.

I would ASSUME you're ok. Couldn't you do something like take the bolt out and keep that in your safe. Then you would just have a stick. Or get a lockable gun case. Just some thoughts. I really don't have an answer for you.

I would guess the trigger-lock would do.

And certainly a good idea, to keep any "accidents" from happening.

But I'd also suggest, at the least, one of them Stack On "cabinets" ... IIRC, Fleet Farm sells 'em ... under $100, I'd guess. Depending on how old yer kids are, if that gun were to git outside the house (trigger-lock, or no), it'd likely attract some unwanted attention ... at the very least.

I only have a loksafe biometric safe for my two handguns. For my rifle I bought a Vangard 39"? Rifle case, anyway it has three locks built into it. I think it was maybe $60ish so there are some el cheapo options.

Menards has a Stack-On wannabe they call Sentinel - those go on sale occasionally for $70 or so...

Your other option someone suggested, lock the bolt in your pistol safe...then put a key lock on a closet somewhere in the house for the stock.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Don't like trigger locks, the gun can still be loaded and if the trigger lock is not fitted properly, can move around and possibly fire.

Much better with a cable lock in my opinion. Or as mentioned, if the rifle is a bolt action, remove the bolt and lock that away.

Is it unloaded?

If so, you are folllowing state law.

MN STATUTE 609.666

Subd. 2.Access to firearms.A person is guilty of a gross misdemeanor who negligently stores or leaves a loaded firearm in a location where the person knows, or reasonably should know, that a child is likely to gain access, unless reasonable action is taken to secure the firearm against access by the child.

I think most police departments will give you a cable lock for free.

I keep my handguns locked up in a pistol safe and my long guns unloaded in their gun cases.

I remember seeing a video of a little kid prying a trigger lock off with a simple flathead screwdriver.

I much prefer something that actually goes through the action if it's not going in the safe.

I guess I should have finished looking through the box first.

Came with a lock that locks the bolt back. Pretty nifty. Thanks for the tips on the gun safe/cabinets, I'll have to keep an eye for a good deal.

Also remember, it's a good idea to kid-proof your guns, and just as important to gun-proof your kids.

I have never heard it put that was. That is a line I will be using in the future.

Don't over think this too much. I put a deadbolt lockset on a basement closet that will keep the kids out. Granted I put the gunsafe in the closet, but the locked closet itself meets the legal requirement.
