Steel core ricochet at Bills

Postby schnit on Fri May 06, 2011 7:40 pm

Just wanted to post a FYI

Took my Mosin Nagant to Bills in Circle Pines. I've never had them give me any grief about the rounds and they know what I'm shooting (almost all 7.62x54 is steel). I've taken it to both Bills at least half a dozen times without problems.

After a shot a man at the lane next to me came over and said he got hit by something when the nagant fired and he had a small mark on his arm. He thought it was brass at first but I told him it was a bolt action rifle and that the brass doesn't shoot out. We looked around on the floor for a while and then found a steel core on the ground. I checked the target and the only shot was in the center of the paper which was lined up on the cardboard hanger properly for bench shooting.

I talked to the range employee about it and he was pretty clueless, said it might have been a one in a million chance that the bullet hit something just perfectly so that it bounced back, he said he sees nagants there all the time without issue (seems like every time I go there's another one as well).

I think I'll leave the mosin at home from now on unless I'm going to an outdoor range. I also don't think I'd feel comfortable at the range with someone else firing one.

I have been hit by far more fragments at outside ranges than inside ones. FWIW ;)

I've got a bullet fragment pasted just above my computer that was imbedded in my forehead, just above my safety glasses, that I got while RO'ing one of the IPSC matches at the Burnsville Pistol Range this winter. Center of my forehead, just above the bridge of my nose. Wife was not happy to hear what the wound was.

There is a real reason for those safety glasses.

Over my 20 or so years RO'ing, I can think of at least two other times that I have pulled an imbedded bullet jacket from myself.
Because I care, I carry.

steel core and steel jacket are different things... Steel core I'd worry about more than a steel jacket.

Pretty much anyone who competes will get rained on by lead/jackets or sometimes get stung by a fragment.
It happens, you won't die from it.

Neither steel core or steel jacketed are allowed there. The rules are on their website.

However neither is "rapid fire" but I've never seen anyone get in trouble for it. I do low ready to controlled pairs with my AR all the time and haven't heard a word either. I think it's highly RO dependent.

Armor piercing 50 BMG peels the steel jacket off the core when it hits steel plate and comes back up to 300 yards in pieces. I pulled a 3/4 chunk out of my forearm one day!

I have shot a ton of steel core surplus at Bills and outdoor and never had one come back. Plenty of dusting and small bites at the steel matches from jackets and lead fragments. Good arguement for safety glasses all the time.

just something about hearing:
Bang, ding, bzzzzzzzz, thwack.

You try to figure it out what it is. Then you see the brass jacket in the 4X4 next to your head.

I went there once with a Mosin and they did the magnet check on my ammo and didn't let me shoot it.. (Robbinsdale)

Considering that Robbinsdale is the only place of the two I've ever even been asked to even see my ammo, that's not surprising.
Considering the shorter range and obstructions, maybe it's a bigger deal there?

Rapid fire in pairs I've never seen reprimanded, but I have on multiple occasions seen them come out and ask folks not to empty the magazine as fast as they can.

Prvi makes copper jacketed soft points and Wolf makes copper FMJs. I'm sure there's other brands but you won't like the prices compared to mil sur.
