Never going to Bills Range again...

Postby RobD on Sun May 08, 2011 4:32 pm

OK... I know we have several Bills employees here, and Bills fanboys.... This is mostly venting, but serves as a perfect example on how one employee and a lack of customer service focus can lose customers,

Had a wonderful brunch at "The Lodge" in Robbinsdale today, and followed up by taking my 2 special women in my life, my mom, and wife, to the range after.

For indoor ranges, I've never been more impressed than Burnsville Range. I've shot at Bills a few times before, and never had a very bad experience, but their lack of lane supervision (especially on newer shooters) and cost kept me away. Today, their service has kept me away for good.

Lane Sharing
My wife and Mom were going to shoot with me... they were going to take turns, so there would only be 2 people in the lane at any time. I still had to pay for 3 shooters. I guess I can understand this... but it certainly is not a very customer centric policy. 2 people on the line, is 2 people on the line.
Their prices confuse me too... $20 for one shooter, $10 for a second, and $15 for a 3rd?

Buy Cardboard and tape.
I had brought targets, but I find the fact that they can't supply cardboard (especially with the restaurant) ridiculous.

Pay for renting eyes and ears.
You really can't build this into your operating costs?

No aluminium cased ammo.
I didn't have any idea why they would do this, other than they are too lazy to separate brass. This policy annoys me. He made me present all my ammo, and then insisted it wouldn't be enough, and tried to sell me more... repeatedly.

So before I even get shooting, I'm out the same as 2/3rds of my annual dues at the gun club.

3 shooters - $45
Cardboard - $2
Glasses - $1
Muffs - $1
$49 + tax

Lets take this and compare it to Burnsville Range:
3 Shooters - $24 ($14+$5+$5)
Cardboard - Free
Tape - Free
Glasses - Free
Muffs - Free
$24 + tax

But whatever... It's mother's day... I'll spend the cash.

No paper plates?!?
So about 10 mins into shooting with Kirstie... The older range officer comes in and says: "You can't use paper plates in here"
"You've got to be kidding", I replied.
He said, "Owner's policy, I don't make the rules"
I asked why?
he replied "It doesn't look good"

Not wanting to argue with him on the line, we took the plates down... Shot up the cardboard. (More on this later)

No picking up brass?
As Kirstie was transitioning out, and my Mom was coming in, RO comes in again with the broom, and sweeps away the brass I was collecting. I informed him that I was a reloader, and wanted to brass back. He replied, "Once it hits the floor, it's our brass"

Now I'm just wanting to leave... but I stick with it for mom, who was coming up.

Mom comes in, and things go fine.

Paper plate saga continues...
Once in the lobby, I asked why the paper plates were banned, and if they didn't allow customer to bring in targets.

The same RO said customer targets are allowed but "If you start shooting paper plates, next you will bring in napkins. There is a difference between a backwoods home range, and a professional firing line"

I replied, "Right, only the professional ranges have targets with Zombies eating porn stars" pointing to this target that they sell:

RO walked away.

I'm furious at this point. I take a card, and leave. Plan on following up with John M. later.. but there is little he can say that would make me want to set foot in there.

For the record.. Burnsville is obviously a non-professional range, as they let you shoot alum. ammo, pick up your brass, and shoot just about any paper targets you want.... The only time you will hear from Roger or Sue is if there is a safety concern.

Venting done... I know there are good people that work there, and good people that love it... But, today was just completely uncalled for.

Thats unfortunate.
Their policies make absolutely no sense.
I'm thankful BPR is close to home. Here's to Sue and Roger for an outstanding range!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :high5:

I like the target 8-) .

Burnsville is nice enough, but their + $5 per gun adds up for those of us with lots of toys to exercise. If I'm sharing a lane with another person, I have found Bills to be cheaper. And I've never had a problem picking up brass at Bill's. Frankly, I hate shooting indoors. Sorry you had a bad day.........

You should have had the person not shooting catch the brass before it hit the floor :P

That is a horrible range trip esp on mothers day.

IMO, the RO was being a little brat. Even their website's rules clearly states pick up your own brass not others. I've shot paper plates at the CP store and never had a problem. CP also provides cardboard and staples free. Ears and eyes are still not. The aluminum case policy is def just to keep profit margins up. Just like the extra shooter cost, since obviously only one person shoots at a time.

BPR charges for a maximum of 2 guns. Anything after that is gravy.

It's only $4 per gun (max charge of 2 guns a person)
so 2 people with 5 guns or 50 guns, is an extra $16...
Which would bring it to $35 for the session.
Good consideration though, thanks for pointing it out.

I agree...... I do have some issues with Bills. They charge you up the wazoo..... The brass thing gets me hot and I don't reload. I paid for that its mine, I paid for renting the lane and I paid for the targets. So why does Bills get to keep what I paid for. Pisses me off. The only reason I walk into there now days is because they carry the older and cooler militray surplus rilfes and pistols that I like.......

I'd like to know which employee that was. Last time I was there, the RO actually helped me sweep up my brass, and I have never gotten any pushback for taking my brass home with me. I can't say that I have had the same experience there, but I also realize that for many, myself included, all it takes is one terrible experience to keep them from going back.

Interesting write up Rob. I'd like to see what management would have to say about it. Especially after it gets posted in the largest and finest gun community in MN.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

I am with you on every single thing you said. I make it a policy never to go to Bill's anymore if I am the one paying for it. The attitude and fee structure over there just simply sucks and I won't pay them to get abused and used.
I do not believe in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance.

I'm not a huge Bill's fan either. The south location is built to grab brass with the pit, and the north one they seem bitch about just about everything except the gang bangers that sweep the line their muzzles. It really varies by the guys working, I've been the norht one a few times and was treated just fine, other times at the same location I had a RO get in my face for changing guns at the lines to often(what ever that is).

I prefer In Range.

I buy the shot card from Burnsville pistol range. $130 for ten range trips. With that you can bring one extra gun and/or person on your punch. More than once I have had three or four pistols and they haven’t made me pay extra. Heck most of the time they will throw in a few extra cheap targets. The thing doesn’t expire. $13 a range trip is the best price I have found and Roger and Sue run a tight ship but also keep out of your hair.

You know bills and the people that work there have always been good to me, don't like it go somewhere else. There are other options.
