Carrying&Camping Legal/Illegal

Postby Josh189 on Tue May 17, 2011 6:43 pm

I was thinking about going camping in a couple weeks and wondering if any knows if you can carry on public land or state land while carrying. Should I notify park rangers or what. Any insight/experience would be appreciated.

If you can carry while carrying?

At any rate, I'm almost 100% sure state parks are gun friendly... well, at least they allow you to legally carry.

From the MN DNR website:

Weapons
It is unlawful for any person to possess explosives of any kind. It is also against the law for any person to possess a firearm (including an air gun) unless the firearm is unloaded and completely contained in a fully enclosed gun case or unloaded and contained in the closed trunk of a vehicle. A person who is legally permitted under MS 624.714 to carry a handgun in the State of Minnesota, may legally carry that handgun in state parks.

Personally, I see no reason to inform a ranger or anybody else.

I always carry when I camp; in fact, especially when I camp.

From HandgunLaw.US:

Carry Allowed in these Areas:
State Parks: YES DNR Legal Update 7/03
State/National Forests: YES DNR Legal Update 7/03
WMA’s: YES DNR Legal Update 7/03
Road Side Rest Areas: YES per MSP

Why couldn't you carry in an office at the park?

I thought state buildings were fine but it was the buildings in federal parks that were off limit. Who was my instructor anyway?

Do you have a permit to carry?

From the MNDNR Hunting & Trapping Reg Book:

"Handguns
Persons age 18 or older may carry a handgun in the woods and
fields or upon waters to hunt or target shoot. Persons under age 18 may
carry handguns for hunting if in the actual presence or under the direct
supervision of the person’s parent or guardian, and if they meet firearms
safety requirements (see page 14). A person may not possess a firearm
while bowhunting for deer. A person may take bear, elk and moose by
archery while in possession of a firearm. Questions regarding
handgunsshould be directedto local law enforcement authorities.
The “Concealed carry or permit to carry” provisions apply to certain
hunting activities. Persons with a permit under this law generally may
carry their handguns uncased and loaded while hunting, and while traveling
to or from hunting locations by motor vehicle under the hunting
firearms transportation laws. However, possession of the handgun while
'shining' or while hunting deer by archery would still subject the possessor
to the provisions."

See http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/hunting/2010/full_regs.pdf for more info.

Now I'm not sure how this would apply to State Parks, I've never carried there, but any other public lands like State & County Forests (and campgrounds therein), WMA's, WPA's, Boundary Waters, etc. is OK under these Regs ... It doesn't specify HOW you may carry the handgun, but I've open carried a handgun (usually a .22) for decades in these areas, both during and out of hunting/trapping seasons and have never had an issue, although I have gotten some odd looks and comments from a few "non-gun" people I've bumped into from time to time.

Yeah a little typo on my part. With the Carry while carrying. I do have my permit, it's just that I've heard so many different things from different people. Including police. However I'm a firm believer that police don't know everything. Thanks you guys for alleviating some of my anxiety.
