A .22 LR rifle that costs lest than $250 brand new. You could maybe, maybe stretch the rifle category to something in .223 or 30 caliber for $300-400 or so, but you begin using the term "need" a lot more loosely. It could be argued that not too many today really "needs" to hunt, and home/self defense realistically would rarely require a battle rifle where a pistol or shotgun wouldn't be as good (but nobody will ever tell me or convince me of that).
A solid, reliable pistol that costs less than $600 brand new. (You said "Must" not "Oh man I'm gonna wet my pants because this pistol is so cool looking.) (Glock, GI or Milspec 1911,
A good solid 12 ga. shotgun for about $400 or less. (Rem 870, Mossberg 500, etc)
These dollar amounts are realistic for a firearm that performs correctly 100% or as close as humans are capable of designing a simple machine to operate at 100% reliability. So I say one rifle, one pistol and one shotgun, at a reasonable price gives a guy all the choices he needs, and probably is overkill for most gun owners' "needs".
In the realm of "Must" I am interpreting that to mean "strictly a utilitarian firearm".
Then again if your "must" means "every gun a guy could ever imagine wanting" then the list is impossibly long, and therefore unobtainable for 80+% of gun nuts.
I think I've sufficiently pooped on the parade marshal here.
