White tail. What do you use?

Postby TommyMN on Mon Jun 13, 2011 5:48 am

Gonna just leave this as a pretty open question. Starting to get into hunting after finally have the funds and the access to private land. Seems like I could read for months just on caliber ballistics. What do you use in caliber and brand? Why? Optics? Rifle vs shotgun? thanks for the opinions guys!

I have my trusty Remington 721 - 30-06 that I bought used in 1966. Since then I have bagged well over 50 deer and a moose.

Currently use a Remington 7600 chambered in 7mm-08. In the past, I have used:

Winchester Model 100 - .308
Winchester Model 88 - .308
Winchester Model 94 - .30-30
Remington Model 7400 - .30-06

I think that covers it.

Anything smaller/slower than 7mmMag is not enough.

I'm debating this year between a Springfield 1884 trapdoor in .45-70 govt, or a Mosin Nagant 91/30 in 7.62x54r.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

Tikka T3 270 with a Nikon buckmaster 4.5x14. Great for medium range shots and the long shots you'll get in Wide open terrain.

I hunt zone 200 (SW MInnesota) which is shotgun only and take a pair of Remington 870's along for the trip, one for posting in a stand/ground blind or purposeful cover and the other when I'm pushing/stalking (a majority of the time). I realize you could swap barrels and use one gun but I also like having a backup available should one or the other malfunction while I'm out for the week.. and it's not like 870's are horribly expensive.

Remington 870 Express Magnum with 20" rifled barrel and 2 3/4" Brenekke KO Sabot Slugs while posting... (wood stock, sling, Weaver side saddle scope mount) - I've got a Weaver 2-4.5x scope as an option but usually stick with irons and use my Leopuld laser rangefinder to ID landmarks out to 150 yards to plan for longer shots.

Remington 870 Express with 20" smoothbore barrel + rifle sights (tuned for light weight, synthetic stock, 5 round magazine & supercel recoild pad, no sling) with a few different rifled slug options depending on what's cheap and has proven to put a hole where I expect it will on paper before venturing out.

Mossberg 500 with a 24" smoothbore barrel with rifle sights. Not sure how it works because I've never fired a shot in the field.
