Can I have a handgun in my Illinois hotel room

Postby b727capt on Wed Jul 20, 2011 10:16 pm

I am traveling to Illinois for a week, staying outside of Chicago. Can I keep my loaded handgun in my hotel room? Is it legal to transport it to the hotel room unloaded in a locked box accross Wisconsin and Illinois? Any advice would be appreciated.

If a non-resident is coming to Illinois to hunt and would like to bring their firearm, how do they legally transport it?
Non- residents must be legally eligible to possess or acquire firearms and ammunition in their state of residence. It is recommended that, in order to be in compliance with all statutes, non-residents transport all firearms:

Unloaded, and
Enclosed in a case, and
Not immediately accessible or broken down in a nonfunctioning state.

Is it legal to have ammunition in the case with the firearm?
Yes, so long as the firearm is unloaded and properly enclosed in a case.

I have a friend/relative who has a "conceal and carry" permit issued in the state in which they reside. Is the permit recognized in Illinois?
No. Non-residents are subject to Illinois law, restrictions, and penalties, and should be familiar with them if the non-resident plans to bring a firearm into the state of Illinois.

I don't know about the hotel room thing. My gut is gonna say no.

I do not know Illinois law and IANAL. But my gut says yes on the hotel room. Your room is your dwelling. In Minnesota it would be treated as if you were in your home.

+1 Illinois is messed up so if you have an issue don't expect it to be pretty, even if it was legal.

USPSA Single-Stack Nationals are held in Illinois (in years past, IIRC, so were Open & Ltd Nationals) ... competitors from all over the country brought their pistols.

However, this was VERY southern Illinois (practically a different state). From what I've heard, the folks who live around there, like the money comin' in ... so no one says "boo" 'bout it.

That said, I'd probly stay in a Missouri motel, fer the nite!

Anywhere else, I wouldn't even attempt to drive through ... what if ya break down? ... they gotta work on yer car? ... gonna leave it in the car? ... gonna take it out?

At the very least, break the thing down as far as it'll go ... and keep the big parts in separate bags!

The only state in the union (not even New York 'er Kalifornia) that don't recognize ANY kinda right to carry a gun! You end up with Goober callin' Barney, it probly ain't gonna go too smooth!

Yes, "Chicagoland" and "Downstate" are two very different places politically and culturally. I'm not sure I'd stay in the Chicagoland area with a gun.

Let's not forget the fundamental law in Chicaga: You need a permit to transport a gun (FOID) and it has to be renewed yearly, and if you don't renew it every year the cops have the right to come to your house or apartment, enter the premises without a search warrant, and confiscate the gun. So, coming in from out of state with a gun to Chicago and no FOID means you're already in violation of the law, and they can take it away from you and also maybe prosecute you with no warrants whatsoever. Welcome to the land that TWO Mayor Daley's and Obama bin Lyin' came from....

Now if you're an Eyetalian, and a "Made" guy, da fix is in any you can carry any damn gun you want anywhere. Same for all the torpedoes that protect you that are bigger than I am. But for an out-of-stater, you're asking for serious trouble.

Which brings up a memory of a story I got from a Chicago resident, concerning the kind of graft that goes on in that city. If you have a "Made" guy for a Goombah, you can get imaginary jobs in places like schools where you're a janitor or something, but you never have to show up for work. A paycheck just shows up in your mailbox every two weeks or every month. Now, the real kicker is the point system: If you're a made guy's kid brother or other close contact, you can have UP TO THREE OF THESE JOBS AT THE SAME TIME!! Yup, you get paid triple time for never lifting a finger if you're highly connected.

There is no such thing as a non-resident Illinois FOID card. You have to have an Illinois ID card or drivers license to get an FOID card.

Illinois State Police wrote:CAN I KEEP A FIREARM IN MY HOTEL ROOM WHEN I TRAVEL?
Yes, assuming no local ordinance applies. The critical question is how the fi rearm was carried into the room and transported in a vehicle. Those actions must be done lawfully

The tricky part is that "assuming no local ordinance applies" business. Good luck with that!

HOW DO I TRANSPORT A FIREARM THROUGH AN ILLINOIS COMMUNITY WITH AN ORDINANCE THAT PROHIBITS FIREARMS OR HANDGUNS?
Illinois’ Unlawful Use of Weapons law does not preempt local ordinances from banning firearms. Persons carrying or transporting firearms through such communities could be subject to local firearm ordinances. It is recommended that you contact local authorities regarding their firearm ordinances.

Exactly. Just don't have one of those one-size-fits-all nylon holsters that spill your gun onto the men's room floor in the restaurant.

Question #1] Why would you want to go to Illinois?

Question #2] Why are you even spending money in that state? as in Hotel room?

I just won't give a state such as that, my time, or money, and if every Second Ammendment supporter in the USA did the same, Illinios would cease to exist! I know, sometimes people have to go there, but, I won't unless I have a gun to my head, but, as soon as we cross the boarder, the gun can't follow, so, then it's my chioce again, so, I aint going then........................

You can stay in an IL jailhouse for possession of a handgun in Cook County.

Just pay attention to the laws.... Be careful...
