New .308 build

Postby mnmike59 on Thu Sep 15, 2011 8:52 am

I just put together a .308 with a Savage receiver, Shilen bull barrel and HS precision stock. I went to the range yesterday to break her in even with a NW wind at 15 - 17 mph
The accuracy of this Rifle is nothing short of amazing, at least to me it is. I am not an experienced Bench shooter, so my techniques are not perfect by any means.

I bore sighted the rifle and shot at 100 yds using a Trijicon 5-20x50 accupoint. I found 5 shot tight groups with Federal Gold match and Hornady ammo. I used some PMC after and the best the PMC ammo could do was 2 moa :( I thought how unfortunate because I can buy it so cheap. I guess I just learned why its so cheap.
This is all new to me and I'm pretty pumped up to do more shooting. I want to Thank RAGGED here on MNGT for all his help. He got me set up and is a wealth of info.

I included a picture of one target group. After my second shot, I noticed a fly landed on my target. Of course I had to swing my POA there :) SPLAT! you can see a very small amount of what remains of the fly.
I'm anxious to go back when there is no wind. It would seem at 100 yards the wind doesn't affect the trajectory very much.

And by the way, I'm giving up on bringing targets to the range. I'm thinking jelly or something to attract flies LOL ( no I'm not going to smear that on paper to attract flies!) I know where your deranged minds wonder!

Great basic build that gets the job done :D ......Impressive for factory ammo. Now we just need to get you reloading so you can afford to shoot it more

I have to agree with Ragged. It's hard to beat a Savage action for the price. I have one I built into a 6BR for shooting 300yd F-Class. For the little money I have in it, I couldnt be more impressed, usually shoots in the low .3s or better at 100.

The original picture is screwing up the browser. 640x480 so that it doesn't make everything micro size text. Especially on a phone

I have a new one piece mount coming. I wanted to get the scope down close to the barrel. This is the lowest mount I could find at Gander.

I see you are also a member of the "Frequent Flyer Club".

He claims that's from shooting a fly that landed on his target.....

Come to think of it, I guess that DOES make him a frequent flyer.

It's the truth -- not just a claim. It was some kind of a wasp.
I was with him the whole time.
He said he was going to try for it, and he DRILLED it. Right in the head & shoulders brain group.
A few minutes later he let me shoot that rifle and, while doing so, a horse fly appeared on my target.
I missed it by about 1/2 inch.
Guess I'm not as good of a hunter as Mike.
