Another Juvenile Gun Death

My heart goes out to both families. I do wonder, however, if gun safety programs in every elementary school might have possibly prevented this.

I confess that I often pulled the projectile and powder from .22 shorts in my youth to fire off the priming compound. However, I had been taught from as far back as I can remember to never, ever, point a firearm at anyone.

Gun safety programs don't always work as well as we think. The "shooter" comes from a hunting family and I am 99.9% sure that he had and passed the MN DNR hunter safety course.

My guess is they were screwing around and an unmodified round got mixed in.

tragic for both families :(

Chisago County Sheriff Rick Duncan said the boys were taking turns shooting at each other using blank rounds they made themselves by taking apart bullets.

Depends on the "program". If it's "stop, drop, roll, and run away screaming", then it probly wouldn't do nothin'.

#1 "don't point it" ... BROKEN!
#2 "finger off the trigger" ... BROKEN!

It's of course, very sad, for the families involved. But to call this an "accident" is highly inappropriate! They were ****in' around with REAL guns ... this is definitely a likely result!

Every once in a while, at the range, I gotta tell a grown man "you pointed your gun at me ... keep it pointed downrange" ... 'cause somehow, somewhere, they picked up the habit of turnin' the thing sideways, to unload/reload it ... I even see 'em do it with revolvers. And most of the time, I get a disgusted look, fer my trouble ... no doubt, 'cause the gun's "unloaded".

I've seen a carry class "pass" the "shooting test" ... 6 - 7 hot guns, at once (to save time, no doubt) ... noobs pointin' guns sideways like it was free. And it was ... the "instructors" didn't say **** 'bout it ... let alone, "fail" 'em! ... probly not good fer business!

None of these kids ... or adults ... are learnin' a ****in' thing 'bout handling a pistol! ... EVER! I've said it 'fore ... even in "hunter's safety", the slide fer "finger outside the trigger-guard" is quite a ways ... days, IIRC ... from "treat it like it's loaded" and "don't point it".

#3 "know your target, and what's behind it" kid died several years ago camping with friends ... hide-n-seek ... hid behind a target, while the shooters were on break ... shooters came off break!

I've been a DNR Firearms Safety Instructor for 37 years.
One of the main points that I make to the Parents every year is that I only have their kids for 15 hours, and it's up to you, the Parents to continue to train and monitor your kids in safe firearms handling.

Firearm safety starts at home.

What a shame, and what a waste of a young life.

Prayers for the Child and the Family.

This is unfortunate, but it is not an accident.

The gun was pointed at the other kid. It was loaded. Even if it was just blanks, it still is dangerous.

Keep them locked up and they are not used unsupervised- period.

Teach your kids firearms safety from the start, and you don't have to keep them locked up.
No problem with locking up your guns, but lots of folks use that as the easy way out concerning their kids and guns.
None of our Dads growing up in Ely ever had guns locked up, but our Parents taught us the right way about safety.
Guns were an everyday way of life.
My Wife and I have raised our kids the same way, with great results, but it took time on both of our parts.

I know that I'm most likely starting a firestorm on my thoughts, but I'm dead set against locking up your guns to keep your kids out of trouble.
Gun safes should be used for criminals.
Firearms safety started VERY early should be used for kids.
