Helicopter lands across street: Man shot in foot!

Postby John S. on Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:37 am

Last night a dude was airlifted for accidentally shooting himself in the foot! The chopper landed right across the street, watched from my picture window. Haven't seen anything in the paper, but, wondering if it was a shotgun, hard to believe a regular bullet would require an airlift.......................................Excitement in the big city, Morristown ROCKS! lol

Waste of an airlift or a 22lr round?

Even if he managed to blow his foot clean off you wouldn't necessarily need an airlift. Tourniquets are great things. Dude either hit something more vital then a foot or it caused him to have a heart attack or something just as serious.

You would be surprised how hospitals use the availability of helicopters now.

It's just a faster moving ambulance that can get you to a hospital that SPECIALIZES in your particular malady.

John, your title confuses me. So, did the helicopter land, then the guy got shot, or did he get shot, then the helicopter arrive? :P

Not too far from Morristown, in Medford, MN there was a shooting at the McDonalds this past week. Man walked up to a car at the McDonalds, put a few rounds into a car and then jumped in a nearby car and escaped.

Revenge for past drug deal where the the "victim" failed to pay some money owed. Two arrested (the shooter and the driver of the get-away-car) a couple days later per the Owatonna Peoples Press report.

Not safe anywhere!

Helicopters are sent for a number of reasons, many do not involve the seriousness of the injury. I have been on runs where a chopper was sent for a second patient and the distance for another land vehicle was too great. Another time a chopper arrived because it was literally overhead when the accident occured and it was used to fill a deadhead run back to the hospital. Then there are the times the first responders misdiagnosed the extent of injuries and called for a chopper thinking they were worse than they really were. Lastly, as tman pointed out, a chopper may be sent to take a patient to a distant hospital which is able to handle a particular injury, not all hospitals can handle microsurgery as an example. I doubt one will see a chopper take in a heart patient though: if the patient is not in cardiac arrest, the trip in the aircraft can stress the patient to the point of additional damage which is to be avoided. This is also the case wit land transport, unless the patient is critical, the red lights and siren are not used in order to lessen stress to the patient's heart. If the patient is in cardiac arrest or close to it, then the lack of space and lift capacity often precludes the additional people needed to perform CPR.

Shot first!

My Step-son is on Fire Dept. His wife said foot shot, but, not so sure now...............................

Maybe he was trying suicide, haven't heard a word more about it in Faribault Newspaper, but then, that's no surprize.

My ride to North Memorial was ONLY 5K for less than 20 minutes I suppose! But, that was in 2002 ;)

They prolly airlifted him so they didn't kill him at District One in Faribault, you can die going there with a wood sliver.......................

A year and a half ago my daughter's chopper ride from children's hospital Minneapolis to St. Mary's(Mayo) was $69,000. Just a drop in the bucket added to the $2.8 million bill we have with Mayo.

UHC had a policy for a while that capped *lifetime* contributions at $3M. Obamacare repealed that.

First thing I thought of when I saw the title was a buddy of mine who shot himself in the foot.

He was working for a construction company that had been having a lot of thefts on the job site. They finished out the attic of the house and the owner asked Paul to spend the night and watch out for the place. So Paul got himself all set up with his little .22 pistol and went to sleep.
A few hours later he heard a noise, so he carefully started down the stairs...missed the 2nd step...fell the rest of the way...the gun went off and he shot himself between the big and second toe. The thief wisely took off before someone else got shot.
Being on a construction site in the boondocks of Louisiana with no phones (this was before cell phones), Paul realized he would have to drive himself to the hospital. But after a few minutes going around in circles, he realized he didn't know where it was.
"I need to find a cop", he thought, and what's the quickest way to find a small town Louisiana cop? Run a stop sign! Cop pulled him over right away.
"What's the rush boy?!"
"I shot myself!" Then the cop says in the most bored voice possible, "Follow me."
When they get to the hospital, the cop goes into the ER with him and announces, "I've got another one!"

Fortunately I have only a 50% chance of shooting myself in the foot. Actually it's probably less than that since I'm missing the right leg and carry on my right hip.
