I agree with Pat that city folk need indoor ranges because country folk will hit the 'back 40'.
I took my boys to Wild Acres near Pequot last summer when we were at a resort on Whitefish. Was just going to have fun plinking in the gravel pit when Mary mentioned she could instruct the boys in trap shooting. We discussed it a little further and it turns out she has been a state champion trap shooter! So we did. She is a very good instructor. My boys did better than I did on the last round of trap.
There is a 100 yard rifle range, but it needed mowing that day. So we went to the gravel pit and shot. The beauty of the gravel pit is the flexibility. We shot pistols, .22 rimfire rifles, and centerfire rifles at the (different) distances we wanted to. And we had the whole place to ourselves. I thought that $20 a head seemed a bit much on the way there but we had so much time, freedom, and space that I thought it was worth it after all.
The boys have asked to go back and do it again this summer.

Not sure how an indoor range can compete with that.
