What up with the GSG 1911 22 cal being illegal in MN? When did this come about and why?

Never mind, I found out why, I think. It has a threaded muzzle for a suppressor.

Illegal for FFL dealers to sell under the "Saturday Night Special" laws. Its a cast "pot-metal" design with a low melt point metal...hence "considered" by the law to be weaker, and a hazard. Not illegal to posess or sell for you and me though...

https://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/sta ... &year=2011

Subd. 4.Saturday night special pistol."Saturday night special pistol" means a pistol other than an antique firearm or a pistol for which the propelling force is carbon dioxide, air or other vapor, or children's pop guns or toys, having a frame, barrel, cylinder, slide or breechblock:

(1) of any material having a melting point (liquidus) of less than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, or

(2) of any material having an ultimate tensile strength of less than 55,000 pounds per square inch, or

(3) of any powdered metal having a density of less than 7.5 grams per cubic centimeter.

https://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/sta ... &year=2011

624.716 SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIALS PROHIBITED; PENALTY.
Any federally licensed firearms dealer who sells a Saturday night special pistol, or any person who manufactures or assembles a Saturday night special pistol in whole or in part, shall be guilty of a gross misdemeanor.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

If you bought this from Bud's, is it still prohibited for the FFL to do the transfer? Is doing the transfer considered to be selling?

yes it is Illegal for your FFL to transfer. The Chiappa version has the same problem.

So the only legal way to get it would be if there were some here in MN already before the SNS laws went into effect. Right?

Or if you bought it while a resident of a state where they were legal, and then moved to Minnesota.

They were not produced before the law.

Sounds similar to the California roster of handguns: can't buy it now, but you can move to this state with it. Ironic, given the GSG-1911 is actually on the CA roster! lol

Technically all polymer framed pistols are banned also due to the melting point, but the interesting thing is that MN (unlike other states with similar laws) has no testing facility, or roster of guns that are banned by name. Only manufacturers who have done these tests themselves, and made the information public are banned. Many FFL's ignore the prohibition altogether, while others will sell certain guns which would be banned if tested, but haven't been. This law, to the best of my knowledge is almost unenforceable. Are you supposed to heat the frame of every pistol to 1,000 degrees before you buy it to make sure it doesn't melt? The law, when drafted was clearly racist in nature, and biased against the poor. There is no way it would stand up in court, if someone were wiling to spend the time and money to challenge it.

Threaded barrels are not prohibited in MN.

No they're not... Polymer does not become "liquidus".

Anyone want to let me stick their glock in my oven at 500F to prove otherwise?

The fact you guys can stipple them with a soldering iron means they're not thermoset, and they will puddle at 800F.

I thought the polymers got around that because the plastic was not the "gun" just the thing that held the gun in one place? Kind like plastic grips are going to melt but the metal frame does not.
