Stopped by Frontiersman Sports this afternoon in search of an M&P 40 full size pistol to replace a Sig Pro 2022 I just purchased. Nobody in St. Cloud had one in stock, and I was in the cities on other business anyway.

I did the normal touchy feely stuff gun stuff while my girlfriend browsed a bit. She made a point to pull me aside and mention how well another customer was being treated on the other side of the store. I'm a fan of spending a bit more for real service, but in this case I didn't have to. The M&P I was looking at was actually tagged right at the price I was willing to pay. If I recall correctly it was ~$5-10 less than if I ordered it from Buds online and had to pay a transfer fee.

I told the guy helping us that I found what I wanted and I'd take the M&P. He grabbed the necessary paperwork and dialed up NICS. I mentioned that I'd been delayed yesterday at Scheels in St. Cloud and wasn't quite sure why. A few minutes later NICS responded with a delay and this gentleman persuaded the rep on the phone to delve deeper, to see if I could have a reason to wait. He also explained to her that I wasn't local to the shop and it would be a shame to make me drive back. 45 seconds later the rep comes back with a proceed and I'm good to go.

It was nice to see somebody take a few extra seconds. Huge difference from the big chains and a really nice experience.

Folks at Frontiersman (Marv in particular) are awesome. Gotta stop by tomorrow to see what temptations have come in during the last two weeks..............

I'm glad I'm not a stickler for first impressions... The first time I was there, I kind of got the feeling I wasn't wanted there. But the subsequent visits have been better then the one before it.

When I was in there a couple of weeks ago, before I purchased my Sig, the guy with the long hair was more the helpful. He even spent some time trying to see if he could track down exactly what I was looking for. None of their sources had it. But I did manage to spot the shot gun I want to buy at a very good price. When it comes time to buy one, that will be one of my first stops.

They are awesome guys and very helpful (Marv is the one I have dealt with the most). They have always helped me out. I always check there before anywhere else. Guntsop Second.

I took about 6 months to come to a decision as to what buy for my first purchase... Started with a list of guns I thought I'd want and went from there. Well at least for a handgun... The shot gun I want was I held one and liked the way it felt. Very comparable to what it's replacing and sitting at the Frontiersman for a little cheaper then I've seen it anywhere.

Thanks to Iasca for posting and for others reiterating their appreciation for real customer service. My wife and I have learned the hard way elsewhere, but have only good things to report about Frontiersman.

As for Frontiersman's "initial coldness", they'll still help you and show you around but might not be very chatty. Imagine walking a mile in their shoes (just off 394, 6mi from downtown) and it's very understandable. Like others have alluded to, once you pay your dues [as a serious buyer] they tend to warm up.

Let's all continue to deliberately reward real customer service!

I like Frontiersman a lot, and have purchased a couple of firearms there. I do really wish they were a little more friendly from the get go though. They do warm up after you talk to them a bit, and certainly when you actually purchase something, but would it really hurt to be a little more outgoing and friendly from the beginning? It's my same basic annoyance with Burnsville Pistol Range. I know they are good people, and not jerks or anything, but some smiles and 'thank yous' go a long way in my book.

How many of us would keep patronizing a non-gun retail establishment where you were treated with less than enthusiastic customer service until you actually make a purchase?

Again, I will keep shopping there now that I understand that's just 'who they are', but I cant help but think they would do better business by adopting a more welcoming attitude to new customers.

I've experianced this and kinda wrote Frontiersman off, understanding this and reading the op ed, I'll give them another chance.

Frontiersman Sports has been my neighborhood gun store my whole life. I trust their opinions and advice. Not as cheap as the big chain stores but the service makes up for the couple dollars difference. I've known Marv for at least 20 years. I always wait for him to help me. The other guys are great as well. My first post, couldn't have been a better subject.

Usually if I have to order a gun, it's from Frontiersman.

I went in today with my wife and daughter, neither of whom had ever seen a gun in real life - All the sales people were friendly and helpful - Even took the time to joke around with my little girl - Ended up walking out with a new G19 -

On the walk out to the car my four year old asked if we had just seen Grandpa - Ha -

Frontiersman is my only gun store from now on -
