Ammo Questions

Postby XDM45 on Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:13 pm

All,

It's late, I'm tired, but I want answers.....so I'll get right to the point.

1) Is it just me or is CCI 22LR and decent (Federal/Winchester/MagTech) ammo in .45ACP hard to find these days? WalMart was out of both this evening.
( I prefer the Federal Champion .45 ACP Ammunition or MagTech Blueline Pistol Ammunition for a .45ACP and CCI 22LR for my .22)

2) Regarding the above ammo types, any good sources for them that are local AND actually have them in-stock AND don't charge an arm and a leg for them?
( I've paid $17-24 for a 50 count box of .45ACP, $20 is ok, less is better..... and $6-10 for a 100 round box of CCI .22LR )

3) Is it going to send off any red flags if I buy a larger amount of ammo? Ideally, I want as much as I can get, but now what I can reasonably afford (and to store on-hand), is another story. I'd like to pick up another 500-1000 rounds of .45 ACP and another 1,000-2,000 rounds of .22, but again, as mentioned in #2, I have my preferences. No low quality ammo for me. That is ALL walmart had left :(

4) I have cash. I fully expect that going on the given prices I've paid in the recent past, let's say 1,000 rounds of CCI .22LR (100 rounds per box x 10 boxes # $10 each), that's $100.00. Walmart had them at $6.87, and had the been in-stock, I could drop a bill on that easy.Next up, the .45ACP ammo..... for the sake of argument, let's just say $20 for a box of 50 rounds, ok? $250 rounds = $100 ( 5 boxes x $20 each), so 1,000 rounds = $400.

If my math is correct, I'm look at 5 bills for everything, and I'm fine with dropping 5 bills. No problem. However, I like to save a buck, so my next question becomes:

5) Is there any of these calibers in bulk for slightly less cost? (and if so, where?)

Next, my habits, of sorts, so far......

Right now I have 1,500 rounds of CCI .22LR and 450 rounds of .45ACP on-hand. When I went to the range last weekend to break in my new guns, I shot 400 rounds of .22LR and 100 rounds of .45ACP. Some of it was in "magazine dumps" just for the pure unadulterated fun, and ti put the guns through their paces. I wanted to take them for a test drive and see what they could do. All of that took 2 hours of time. That all being said, I probably won't shoot that much every time I go, but it could be more or it could be less. Certainly .22LRs aren't hard to go through, but neither is the .45ACP. The .22 has 10 round magazines (of which I have 6), and my .45 has 13 round mags, of which I also have 6. Only once did I load one 13 round magazine to capacity, since I usually load them to 10 rounds each to not stress the springs too much in the mags. The .22, I load to the 10 round capacity every time.

Based on the very limited above information, here's the next question.....

6) What is a good amount for me to have on-hand do you think?

LASTLY (and finally!! I can hear everything thinking "Does this guy EVER shut up??"), I'll end my ramblings of madness by listening to the pearls of wisdom and heeding sound advice.

Postscript Note: I'm not new to guns, have some decent knowledge about them, but haven't shot (until recently) in about 25-30 years, so I'm "starting over" and treating myself as a neophyte, even though I'm not. Just trying to get back into the game, so to speak.

You asked a lot of questions. Here is one question for you: What's so hard about looking up the price of ammo and buying it?

Here are my answers:
1) Yes
2) No
3) No, but posting on the Internet might.
4)?
5)Anything in bulk costs less.
6)An infinite supply would be the best to have on-hand.

You should try looking for decent priced good (not that junk stuff) bulk 5.56ammo in FMJ/soft point/hollow point (or anything that's not tracer, green tip, or steel core). Doesn't exist. The way things are going, I think any ammo's going to be hard to find soon, unless your willing to buy junk, or severely overpriced. My AR needs food, donations accepted.

I think we all feel your pain :( Ammo isn't cheap in price, and cheap ammo tends to be very costly in ways more than cash.

1--I'm seeing plenty of it; just picked up a couple bricks of CCI Blazer .22 for $20/ea; there were many more on the shelves. Not Walmart, though. Same for .45...gun shops have plenty in stock.

2--Local for me porbably isn't local for you...

3--No.

4--Not really a question there, Sparky.

5--Yes, but your best bet is to go online.

6--As much as you want.

As to the online--SGAmmo.com, Ammoman.com (bear in mind their prices include delivery), AIMsurplus.com, Surplusammo.com...plenty of good deals out there. AIM tends to have great deals, but they also tend to go FAST. Get on their e-mailing list, and be prepared to jump on a deal as soon as it comes up.

I've had really good luck with the CCI Blazer .22 LR (brass cased, lead round nose) ammo from Glen's which is about the best price out there ($17 a brick, shipped/taxed in MN) right now in case quantities... 5000 rounds for $170 shipped versus $100 for 1000 Mini-Mags... Low cost does not automatically = low quality, there are good values out there in ammo that is perfectly suited for practice. If you want the best prices you need to buy in at least case quantities (1000 centerfire pistol/rifle, 5000 rimfire, 250 shotgun) and know where to look. As far as buying premium ammo to practice... I'd personally opt for the least expensive ammunition of reasonable quality and invest the difference in training.

SGAmmo has some good options on .45 auto:

http://www.sgammo.com/product/prvi-part ... tizan-ammo - $325 a case shipped
http://www.sgammo.com/product/federal/1 ... -fmj-ae45a - $355 a case shipped

If you wanted a cheap to run pistol caliber, 9mm is where it's at.

http://www.sgammo.com/product/speer/100 ... ammo-53650 - $215 a case shipped

I, personally, would not talk at length about how much ammo I have on hand because it's really nobody's business, just like I don't talk about how much money I have in the bank or how much beer is in the fridge. How much you have on hand should be based on how much you shoot each month and how concerned you are with price/availability in the future.

I agree !!!

Now does anybody have a 1-ton truck that can help me move? Just don't get stopped crossing the border.

And Thank You Jason for the links you have provided - I bought 2 cases of the Blazer 22 ammo for our Spring Shoot-Off.

Yeah, good advice on not saying how much you have on hand, and also good links, so thank you everyone. I have some leads for lead now :)

I've found the Blazer brick to be on par with Mini-mags - Just not quite as clean - Perhaps slower - Never the less an excellent alternative for plinking/general practice, at half the price of the Mini's...

Yeah, and it shoots really well out of my 22/45 MKIII pistol, which is a plus.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.
