Armslist Puchase out of state - what would you do?

Postby LS3Miata on Sat May 26, 2012 4:52 pm

I'm looking for a Remington 1100 20 gauge and put an add on armslist. I received a reply from what I thought was Aurora MN, turns out it is Aurora, IL. I would be more trusting if I was responding to a for sale add, but he responded to my WTB add.

Actually, as I type this, I realize I want no part of it, when in doubt listen to your instinct. But since I've typed it, I will post to hear what you guys would do.

His first reply
i have this gun for sale email me back if you are still interested andam located here in Aurora

His followup to my questions

What in the responses concern you?
How is this different than the way you might expect any transaction to take place?
I'm not saying I'd do it, just asking : "What did you expect?"

ValId question. Two concerns. First the poor response. I'm not a grammar or spelling nazi, but the response is poor. Second and more importantly, he provides no detail whatsoever on the specific model. It Really seems to be a generic reply.

Edit - I also requested a picture and it was Ignored.

Good point on the lack of description....was there no price mentioned by the seller?... In my mind I immediately assumed it was the model you are looking for. Perhaps asking for pics(everyone has a cell phone camera), or suggesting a local( to him) FFL handle the shipping/ transfer, after you communicate with that FFL.
The crappy composition might be a concern. Clearly someone who can't type well.

ETA: Any request that is not addressed, if not fulfilled(the photo) is a bad sign to me.

If you can find a brick n mortar ffl you might be able to (for a small fee) get him to be an intermediary. You send your money to him, he accepts & pays for the gun after inspection & verification it's legit, then ships to your local ffl. A little more $, but protection

Nigerians often use military aliases, tell him you need pics with local paper.

it's a scam. I had that response copied as pasted to me in response to a armslist WTB ad I put up for Rugers. I had a friend get the same thing when he put a WTB ad up this afternoon. Stay far away. Trust your gut on this one.

"i am selling this lovely gunbecause i'm in a hugeMoney problem and have no choice than to put a few things out for quicksale"

It's a scam. I got these exact same words in a response to a SS Kimber on Armslist that was priced too good to be true about a month ago.

The description could apply to any firearm, it's a generic reply.

Seems odd to me as well. I have never been a military man, yet "I cansend you my Military ID so that you can know the kind of person youare dealing with..." is not generally what I hear from vets. In addition you asked for pics, and were ignored.

Have him send you his phone number and full name and address and call him then do some searching online. reverse phone look up facebook, phone white pages, http://www.judici.com/courts/cases/case ... =IL026015J and get the feel of him and if he's legit.
