Now that's just sad... (although I also have holsters collecting dust).

Well, I have a Serpa for my XD-M so I'm familiar with those, what's the IWB one you have?

I use a carry lok and it doe snot have a thumb break but does have a retention clip that is released with your finger.

I'm thinking of getting a thumb break or some other kind of retention device for when I ride my bike. If I open carried often I definitely would. So I voted 'thumb break'.

The Carrylok is a good compromise between a thumb break or not. Personally, I'm just fine carrying a 1911 (or others) in a well-fitted holster with no thumb break or other retention. I DO have a couple holsters with retention options in case I do anything very active that might result in losing the gun - such as a canoe trip. For daily carry, no break is my choice. I usually carry in Blade-techs and they hold the gun quite securely, even as far as running, rolling around, etc.

If I had more "extra" money for a holster, I'd certainly look at a CarryLok holster or the Safariland equivalent, which I think actually puts the release lever in a better spot.

Unless carrying openly, retention beyond a well-fitting holster is a solution looking for a problem.

A properly designed holster made for the gun (not a one size fits most) does NOT require a thumb break. Unless your a police officer don't add complexity that does not need to be there.
