1911 - OWB - Thumb Break or No Thumb Break?

Postby Thunder71 on Mon Oct 01, 2012 12:55 pm

I'm torn on what to get, but have narrowed it down to two holsters - one has a thumb break, the other does not.

For this poll:

1911
Cocked and locked
Outside the waistband
Primarily concealed, but occasionally open carried

I like the thumb break when I'm being more active. For example, when I was fishing on lake cedar in Minneapolis. My buddy flipped the canoe. If I was wearing my cross breed IWB I would probably be buying a new gun right now.

Unless it's required for your work, skip it. Just one more thing to get in the way in a "need to use" situation where you're already likely to be all thumbs and 50 IQ points less than usual.

Here is another question.... do the rest of your holsters have thumb breaks? If not, skip it. One more thing you aren't accustomed to and might forget to do in a SHTF scenario.

Again, My opinion. Others may/will vary.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.

Check out the Bianchi Carrylok.

No thumb break, but active retention.

My personal fave when carrying a 1911 OWB.

Hmmm, that Bianchi looks like a nicely laid out package... going to see if they plan on making one for the XD-S as well (doubt it, but can't hurt to ask).

Not an issue with a 1911 w/ safety on - but another consideration is re-holstering. Is that thumb break going to somehow wind up inside the trigger guard when you're putting it in? Like I said, more of an issue for Glocks or other triggers that are 'safe'.

Check with MNSmokeater to see if he has a holster that would work. He did, at one time. AND he's lefthanded.

Thunder I have A carrylok that was pretty much my most used holster and it was with a 5in 1911 and I did carry Cocked an Locked and had no issues with drawing or reholstering. I also have a Serpa and a IWB leather one from CQC and Blackhawk!

Good to hear, I'm glad you like it... I just ordered a CarryLok (that's what happens when you are stuck at work waiting for people to leave so you can do an upgrade).

I told myself I was going to wait 2 weeks to make a decision on a holster... I made it 4 days.

LOL - That was pretty amazing. 8-)

Are you looking to sell some or are you still using them all?
