New Safe (kind of....) with pictures

Postby XDM45 on Wed Oct 03, 2012 10:57 pm

So my work just gave me for 100% free, my new safe. It's not a traditional safe because it's one of those fire resistant filing cabinets.

I think it's actually better because it doesn't look like a safe, it can be dropped from 3 stories and not open, it can withstand 1 hour @ 1,700 degrees, if you break the lock, the tamper-resistant system (because nothing is 100% tamper-PROOF) locks it down so that you can't open it. Even better still, each drawer is completely enclosed in it's own separate compartment which is surrounded by heavy-duty protection against fire and such. IF you can get into it, no going from one drawer through to another one. Lastly, it weighs 450lbs, so good luck moving that bad boy especially once it's filled with ammo and stuff which will make it even heavier.

I'm glad I didn't go out and drop tons of cash on a gun safe.

Nice, you can't complain with free. are you just going to use it for ammo storage?

Ammo and other things, yeah. Free is good, true that, but I've also been given some of those little personal stentry safe boxes and they aren't anything like this.

ok, so how did you end up with a free fire-resistant, tamper-resistant, heavy duty file cabinet that retails for over $1,400? were they replacing them, and you were in the right place at the right time?
sounds great!

Hmmmm - wonder if it's free because it has asbestos in it, and giving it awy is WAYYY cheaper than paying high disposal costs to some environmental firm that will just use it themselves rather than get rid of it... Nice catch!! I'm envious, and a pstol guy mostly, so that would be better than a normal gun safe to me. ENVY!!!!

We reduced office space for tax reasons and some of our departments have migrated to other parts of the company in other states, plus there's been some RIFs. One guy got one, there's another one there (no key), and of the 3, I got the best one. IF it happens again, I'll grab one. Often times we get laptops, desktops (neither with HDDs in them), office furniture, etc. Next time, I'll post. This is the same place I got 8 Pelican cases from and sold/traded on here recently.

I have the same thing except black. Bought it at one of those 'out of business' auctions, $60. Two bidders. It took three of us to get it home and down in the basement. Heavy! Never thought about keeping my handguns/ammo in it-until now. I just have to clear a couple drawers of that stupid tax stuff.

Bottom drawer = ammo
Top drawer = pistols
Middle two drawers = papers.
