Had a non Incedent last night.

Postby BamBam on Sun Jun 29, 2008 1:34 pm

Hello everyone, haven't been around for a long time, been very busy with "stuff" good to see the board is still growing. Alot of new names on here. I haven't had time to make it to the range lately but am going to make it a point to do so, set aside at least once a week. I still carry most of the time when I'm out which is the topic of this post. Last night the wife and went to a movie, upon returning at about 10 pm. my neighborhood was swarming with LEO. We knew they where looking for someone so we drove into our garage and quickly shut the door, monitoring it the whole time. Then we thought, what if the BG was in our house? So I pulled my fire arm proceeded very quietly into the door (attached garage) peaking around corners ect. When we got in we heard a thunk noise twice up stairs, I told my wife to wait by the back door and if anything happens to run outside asap and flag down a LEO. I proceeded to clear the house, going from room to room, using mirrors and turning on light switches from around corners etc. while my heart was beating 100 miles an hour. after the house was cleared I yelled to her everything was ok. It turned out that the wind was blowing the shade in and making the thunk when it hit the window frame. This non incident was a real eye opener to us, I think I did a half way decent job of clearing the house, but need to practice with the wife, also some training. Has this happed to any of you folks, I probably wouldn't have been as alarmed but with all the commotion going on outside I really felt there was a possibility. thanx

That was just north of the interstate and just west of Brooklyn Boulevard, yes? I was wondering what was going on over there...

You nailed it. Was kinda freaky, you live in the neighborhood? this has happened a few times within a block from me, one time I watched the LEO's arrest a BG in the next door neighbors yard. Others Iv'e seem them guns drawn hiding behind trees as they responded to a certain address.

Geesh, I know what I'd do if I thought someone was in the house when I got home with the family.

Call 911 and let the cops clear the house! Of course, I have no training in CQB and that kind of stuff. I'm glad to hear it was a false alarm!

Went to a house party on the 6700 block of Scott Ave. Leaving on 69th, I saw a lot of BC squads, about 10PM. Similar thing happened in my area, in S. Mpls., about 3-4 years ago. Cops cordoned off a large area, and swept with dogs. Don't think they found anyone here.

You were fortunate and I'm glad to hear it went well. I am not an attorney nor a cop but if things had gone the other way and you had to shoot, you may have found yourself in big trouble doing cop work on your own. A jury may feel you contributed to the situation and hold you responsible when you could have easily left your home and called 911. IMHO, playing hero with the cops already in your neighborhood is not a wise choice. There are many "what ifs" that you may not have considered such as more than one BG in the house. While you were distracted upstairs, a BG could have taken your wife as a hostage and that would have complicated the situation for you and the cops.

I am waiting to hear from some of the carry instructors that frequent this forum. I have taken the class twice and from it I feel my carry permit allows me to defend myself but is not a license to go "hunting".

Good Luck

Not a good idea. Why put yourself at risk? You are not trained to clear a building, the cops are.

Just make sure they're holding something of yours worth more than $500 then happy hunting

That would make it legal, but you're probably right, in that, it would eliminate any room for doubt and some time in a holding cell and a potentially large legal bill, if you had the police go through the house instead. Personally I'm a little uncomfortable with letting the police search my house without any kind of a warrant. Not that I have anything illegal going on but I also don't like the idea of anyone outside of my insurance company and family knowing what kind stuff I have in my house. I guess that's the difference between here and Texas. If you had killed the burglar there the police would thank you and say good work, thanks for saving us the trouble of having to jail and prosecute the low life.

I live alone. and every night I come home, I pay special attention to the things around me. Are they where I left them, ETC. ETC. During the three and a half years that I have lived in my home, I have felt the need to clear it three times. They were all due to sounds similar to what the OP encountered, and turned out to be nothing.

On a side note, I don't see any problem with what the OP did. He wasn't going in to his home because he KNEW someone was in there, as one person called it (hunting). He was merely being cautious, taking the proper measures to ensure his home was safe for his family. What would be the difference between encountering a BG while clearing your house and encountering one after being awakened in the middle of the night by a loud "thud"?

Potential for BG greatly increased and the cops are already in the area.........use em

The difference is that in the middle of the night when you hear a thud, YOU ARE ALREADY IN THE HOUSE.

There had been a robbery of a pedestrian, with shots fired, a short while earlier. So they were looking to see if the perps had stuck around. Seems they hadn't. I seriously doubt it was tactical training of any kind, but perhaps the precinct was a bit quiet that evening, and they wanted to send a message...

ttousi wants to know if that has something to do with sheep............... :cogitating:

I see it as partially questionable.......police searching area, possible active situation, unknown number of person(s).........

situational awareness: driving into garage and closing door could have been an ideal situation for the wrong person(s)............

seems like a good time to engage in discussion with LEO to get OK or declare intent, or alternately time for a coffee and pie................

Ya guys I wasn't 100% sure what I should have done, I here thuds, clunks, squeaks, rattles and all kinds of noises and treat every one with respect. I don't call 911 or flag down a LEO every time I hear this. If I Knew some one was there or there were signs of forced entry, I would have left immediately, the first thing I did do was have the wife go to the back door, I checked to make sure there wasn't any forced entry, knowing this the odds were a lot lower that someone was there. Still had my heart rate up and wanted to be sure.
