Indoor Gun range

Postby InsertNameHere on Sun Jan 06, 2013 6:47 pm

How much ammo do you go through on your typical 1hr lane rental at the indoor range ?
And what distance do you like to shoot at?

I shoot a revolver (.357 & .44 mag) and a bolt action rifle (.223), rarely a semiauto handgun so my numbers may be different than the average guy at the range. I take 40 rounds for the rifle and 100-150 rounds of .38 special. Once in a while I will bring out the big guy and shoot 2 cylinders through it.

Typically I go to Bills and don't shoot anything less than 20 yards. Maybe a Cylinder at 10 yards. Then all the way out to max... so about fifty. I usually go through about 100 rounds. Between me and my buddy we went through 132 rounds today. Then about 50 rounds through Ruger Mark something... If I am going out to oakdale, I tend to take a lot more time and its not uncommon that I will go through 200 rounds of .44 mag because the 100 yard range is a lot more entertaining. When I had my 9mm I always used at least 200 rounds when I brought that along. So I guess all in all between 100 and 500 rounds. I don't get very many opportunities to shoot so when I do I make it worth it.

I use to do 100-200 rounds in an hour when I went to Bill's a lot.

These days I do about 50 in 20 minutes. I focus on draws and malfunctions. I work fundamentals with SIRTs; occasionally I will rattle off ten or so straight to make sure my splits are still decent with live rounds.

When I shoot indoors, its almost always just group shooting- Generally, they won't let you do much else.

If I use 100 rounds in an hour, I am screwing around; it is usually more like 50, but I try and save each 5 or 10 shot group, and write notes on it.

Function testing a competition load (rare, but I have done it, only at BPR as Bill's didn't like me dumping 28 round mags out of an open gun for some reason...) was at least 500 rounds, and usually I was done in less than a half hour.

With friends plinking, I usually am the one supplying the gun and ammo, and it usually runs around 150 to 200 rounds in an hour for all of us in one lane.

Not to steal the thread but I am wondering what the going price per hour is for range time. Down here in Winona all we have is Gander In LaCrosse and that is $25/Hr.

Gander Lakeville is the same.

Bills is $20 for 1 person in a lane or $15 each for up to 3 in a lane; unlimited time.

OGC (outdoor) is $18 per person when they let in the unwashed masses.

Not sure what BPR charges.

I think BPR is $15 for the first person.

When I go to the range I usually go though 250-300 rounds.

Indoor- 150-200rds of pistol and 30-50rds of rifle. Sometimes it is far less, just depends on what I am there to do.

Since 04/21/2012 (my first trip to the range) until 01/05/2013 (my 18th trip to the range), I've shot a total of 4,550 rounds of .45ACP and 5,200 .22LR, for a combined total of 9,750 shots fired. All new ammo. No reloads.

Least rounds fired in a session for .45ACP = 50
Most rounds fired in a session for .45ACP = 600
Average rounds fired in a session for .45ACP = 200

Least rounds fired in a session for .22LR = 100
Most rounds fired in a session for .22LR = 650
Average rounds fired in a session for .22LR = 300

I shoot indoors and outdoors. I track how many rounds fired, at which range, on which date I shot and on which date I cleaned each gun. I also track any upgrades, modifications, etc, all of this and more in an Excel worksheet.

As for distance, usually 21 feet, sometimes 15, sometimes 25, sometimes 50, but usually 21 feet.

I usually will shoot about 150 total rounds between the 9MM & 40, and somewhere around 100-150 out of the 5.56/.223.

Were you shooting now that lets you practice draws? Holser work will get you booted at almost every indoor range in the twin cities.

Holster work with a laser training system is pretty effective, safe, convenient, cheap, smoke-free, clean, and can accommodate many activities not allowed at indoor ranges. http://gunclasses.net/resources/shop/laser-dry-fire/ ... Just don't expect it to replace shooting real bullets, experiencing recoil, etc. The lasers can let you practice advanced actions like motion, unorthodox positions, etc, but for a beginner it also does great work to help refine the shooting fundamentals: grip, stance, trigger control (in particular!), sight alignment, sight picture, etc. If you have friends over who are a bit skiddish to shoot a gun at a range, it's also a nice, low-stress introduction. I love the laser. And, again, be realistic about what a Laser Trainer really represents. You still need to shoot real bullets, and lots of them.

Consider this compromise for those indoor ranges; when at an indoor range, you start at one side of the stall with the gun at your side pointed down range, then quickly shoot a small group (2-4 shots) on the target, while taking a step to the right side of the stall. Then, pull the gun back to the 'compressed ready', and look left and look right, to your 6, both ways, for a second threat. Then, repeat. Your shooting can be initiated either by a timer or by a buddy giving you the command to 'stop the threat'. Although the gun doesn't come out of the holster, starting with it in the position it is in an instant after unholstering (at your side, pointed out at the threat) will supplement the dry fire holster work you did at home.

Do this while waiting for warm weather, when you can go outside to do what you want safely...?

When the Voice of Reason and I went to InRange to try out some 22lr handguns we went through 150rds. If it was just me I think I would have gone through 200.

Glad we went though, the wife found she didn't like how the SR22 shot even though she really likes how it looks and feels. There will be a 22/45 Lite purchase soon......

Gander sucks. They won't even let you use hand loads...
