Cabelas not taking phone calls.

Postby mrp on Wed Jan 23, 2013 9:12 pm

I called Cabelas in Owatonna this morning and asked to talk to the firearms desk. The operator said they were no longer taking any calls. If you want to know what they have, you have to visit the store.

Wow, that tells you how swamped they are. They don't care if you want to call them or not. They are so busy selling stuff to folks in the store that they can't take time to answer a call. That's funny, but sad.

Just a sound retail practice.

They should hire someone just to answer the phone.

I think it means that they're really busy. Period. No change in attitude, just overwhelmed.

^^^THIS^ If you are a retailer with a customer with a hand full of cash at the register( or the customer with a hand full of cash at the register with a gleam in his eye) What do you think SHOULD happens right then when the phone rings? It's a common practice to take care of the customers you have in the store, and if necessary, ignore the phone.

If experience at the smaller guys is any indicator -- the majority of the calls are asking about AR's and magazines. Probably just got tired of saying, "No, we don't have any of those."

That's probably the case.
Maybe someone should call and ask why they don't answer the phone...

I'm just a little guy and I had to put a new message on my cell and an auto-reply on my emails for a month.
I was spending at least 2 hours a day on the phone telling people what I didn't have.
I hated to do it but I wasn't getting anything done and I didn't like to keep interrupting a customer
that was trying to pick up a gun.
Another problem is even if these stores have a gun when you call, chances are it'll be gone by the time you get there.
It's still crazy.

I wonder how long it would take to train someone to do a decent job of answering the phone in a gun dept under the current conditions....they probably don't have anyone to spare for training a new person right now.
And like ThunderJohn suggested, it's likely the same 500 guys calling everyday looking for the same pmags and ARs, that won't be in the store an hour after they've arrived.

Why? So they can pass that guy's salary onto their prices?

Pass. I'll deal with the inconvenience for a while until the masses wise up and quit buying everything in sight. Cabelas wasn't that easy to deal with before the hysteria anyways.

I agree, ALSO, not to mention. To help someone who is physically there has a better chance of a sale than someone calling having them run around and end up saying, ok thank you and never show up.

Also went to Cabela's in Rogers last night and they were busy....Seems like they are busy everyday, full of people who are or were on the fence and are now buying. They are a business, and they need to make sales.
