Want VS Hoarding?

Postby heavygunner on Fri Mar 08, 2013 9:16 am

I was looking at my ammo the the other day and though if i was a boarder line hoarder??? I have maybe 500 rds for my 9mms.40s,45,357 pistols and maybe a 1000rds for 5.556 and 600 rds for my sig 308. I think i am far from hoarding from what i see on youtube some people have thousand and thousands or rounds. I have really slowed down on shooting because i cant find ammo anywhere. I am happy with my inventory but could a lot of that up on a good weekend. Maybe its time to be a hoarder but now's not the time.

You have enough for a good range trip, not even close to a hoarder. :D

FTW!

I shuddered, thinking of my "measly little pile" of ammo boxes stacked up in one corner of my reloading room - wishing it was a lot bigger than it is! (even though I'm not sure how many rounds it contains... as insignificant as it appears to me, if the news media saw it, it would certainly cause wide-spread wetting of the pants over such an arsenal!)

I'd not call it hoarding until you had to start stacking your CONEXes three deep.

Actually, a hoard in the present context is best defined by amount of ammo owned over a period of time in years. I've been handloading for 40 years, and while my stocks are up a bit, that's because I'm not dirt poor and loading 9mm with a Lee Whack-A-Mole kit any more. You're hoarding if you had 0 EBR's on Dec. 14th and no ammo, and now have at least 1 EBR and 2,000 rounds of ammo to go with it, and still don't know Jack S*&T about the gun or how it works...

If you don't want to be subject to the boom-bust price and availability problems that come up every 4 years lately it's a smart bet to stock up on ammo you shoot frequently. I can't imagine trying to be a 3-gunner right now... Your average hunter/recreational shooter probably doesn't need more than a box or two per firearm... anyone who practices regularly or does a lot of recreational/league shooting (3-gun) could easily burn through ammo in case quantities (or more) every month which is pushing 12,000 rounds per year... In which case buying and stashing 10+ cases at a crack isn't hoarding as much as it is simply buffering against supply and price volatility.

Buy it cheap and stack it deep...

You're nowhere near hoarder.

I look at what I have, and I really wish I had a lot more. Especially with how you can't replace it anymore.

3,500 .45ACP
25,000 .22LR

Am I a hoarder?

Of course in an ideal World, I want 25,000 in reserve and 100,000 total in both calibers as well, with the .45ACP all being JHP. Realistically, I can see 25,000 .22LR in reserve and 25,000 .22LR usable, so 50,000 total; and 10,000 .45ACP Ball in reserve with 5,000 .45ACP Ball usable (target ammo for both amounts). For JHP, if I had 1,000, that's probably plenty. Right now I have 100.

Yes and No.

.22LR = yes.
.45ACP Ball = very sparingly because of the cost and the rarity of it. If prices get down to .25-.35 a round, I'll shoot it more, but not at .45-.57 a round like it is now.
