Nagant stripper clips

Postby JTHubred on Sun Apr 07, 2013 3:49 pm

I just recently picked up a Mosin and am currently without the clips, any recommendations of where would be the most cost effective place to find some as well as a can opener for the ammo? Or if you have some of either you can spare send me a pm.

I have heard that only the real Russian stripper clips work the best. About a year ago there were awesome deals on surplus Russian ammo loaded on stripper clips, but I would not suspect they are still around. I bought a few from cheaper than dirt about 2 years ago and they work about as well as anything else for a Mosin, but I don not think they are Russian. If you find any and afford them it probably wouldn't hurt to try them out.

I've never shot one. Are they that hard to load without a stripper clip? My 1903A3 loads pretty easy with just an index finger and thumb.

In Theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In Practice, there is.

JG sales has been getting 300rd tins of this in from time to time for a not so bad price.

http://www.buymilsurp.com/ - is where I got most of mine years ago - Don't know exactly where they were from, but they appear to be original military.

Right now the cheapest out there that I've seen are the new production chinese - You'll know these ones by the high polish or chrome plating. My experience with them has been negative. They can work, they're just extremely tight, on the rim rather than the web where they're supposed to be tight.

With any of them your results may vary, by the clip, ammo and rifle combination.

Which ever ones you get, unless they're well used they're gonna start out real tight and difficult to use.
Store them loaded, this will help break them in. If you see any burrs clean them off.

And get used to a whole lot of thumb hurt and practice.

Can openers? Hmmm... I've seen them at a random gunshow from time to time.
Generally the cans come with an opener, so it's kinda a disposable item. Most folks probably throw them away.
Depending on the tin, I suspect you could probably use just about any household can opener, or a knife in a pinch...

It's actually easier without the clips - but the clips make the process a lot faster if you're practiced.

Use your fingers for now. Buy the clips when they go on sale later.

I got two of those 300rd tins from AIM surplus on July 1st this past summer. Got it for what I thought was a pretty good deal, $66.95 each. Opened one so I could use the clips and kept the other one sealed. They work fantastic, if you can find those 300rd tins, pick some up.

If you are ever in the Cottage Grove area or Inver Grove Heights on Sunday afternoons, I can spare 6 clips for a 6 pack of Moose Drool ;)

I could part with a can opener for $10 and shipping (I am way out in the SW corner)

For a can opener, walk into FF and ask them nicely...

Last fall I bought 7.62x54 ammo from CTD, 20 round packs and each 5 rounds were already mounted on stripper clips. Was pretty cheap at the time, but they don't seem to have them now...or sell anything cheap anymore for that matter. Should be able to find the same thing online at a number of different places.

At least 7.62x54 ammo didn't hit the roof, prices went up a little bit but it's still around and a relative bargain. My son has two of those, one he shoots nice non-corossive ammo in, the other one he shoots surplus and doesn't worry too much about it.

When I first got my Mosin years back I went looking for stripper clips as well. Since than I have seen my buddy nick, cut, stab, slice and bleed so many times I don't see a value in them anymore. Once you load your Mosin a few times you can load manually almost as fast as from a clip. And no risk of bleeding all over the place!

About 5-6 years ago there was a guy selling brass clips on eBay, that he made. I bought about 20 of them and they work great. I looked there recently and he seems to have disappeared...
