How is local stock? + a couple other questions

Postby dagues on Wed Apr 24, 2013 10:13 am

Not a new member but it's been a couple years and I completely forgot my login credentials.

Anyways, I haven't been driving lately so I haven't been out to the local gs's. Curious how local stock is in comparison to online, specifically with regards to AR15's and AR10's. Reason I ask is it's refund time and I have some old stock I want to put towards either 15 or 10, or both. And a 1911. (Taxman was "good" to me this year...)

I don't have my PTP anymore and with the scare, I don't want to wait around for all that. So I was planning on doing the POS check.

If cash is king, I will be royalty this weekend so I'm looking to make some deals. If anyone has any suggestions, preferably closer to the inner part of Minneapolis, let me know. I know of Frontiersman and Bills, calling Bills at lunch. I'm NE Mpls by the way, work downtown. (The jeep needs a new battery and a couple things which is why I haven't been driving, if it matters.)

Also, with the point-of-sale check, how does that work? Do I go there, make my purchase so the check is initiated, and then wait for them to call me? Or is it same day, while I wait?

Thanks! 8-)

You won't find a local gun store that'll do the POS check for an "Assault" weapon or handgun. You'll need a permit to purchase or permit to carry.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Ahh thanks for that. That's something I had not considered. Guess I'll just go drop the form off and be patient.

Its a MN legal option -- its just that most (all?) stores don't do it because of the PITA factor.

That's what I had noticed when I was reviewing things the other day, I figured if that were the case I won't bother with the application until I get through my carry course. But in this climate it's understandable I suppose.

None of them did it even before the current climate.

Now that you mention it, I do recall an instance when I got my Glock a number of years back. I was at Frontiersman, and I knew about this legal option. While I didn't ask directly, I pretty much got the impression they wouldn't do it without the ptp/ptc.

Thanks for saving me the hassle and a possible wasted trip down to Ahlmans too anyway. I'm not as immersed in the local culture as I would like, too much to do. My usual wmd's are 6-strings and I don't even have time to play all of them as much as I would like. So it goes.

Regarding AR-15 availability, they don't seem to be too hard to find. I've seen them on the shelves repeatedly at places like Rogers Cabela's, Blaine Gander Mtn, St. Cloud Scheels. Others have talked about seeing them elsewhere. There are also 1911s out there, but I'm sure the selection of what brands/models varies greatly.

One thing to keep in mind is that the PTP turn-around is a week or less; whereas a PTC is a month; after you do the class.

Just because you have a PTP; and may pick something up next week does not mean you can not get a PTC down the road.

@ Blue - Thanks!

@ Nalez - Really?! Did this change recently? When I last had mine in 2011, I believe it was a month/30 days and even then I still had to chase the MinnetonkaPD to get it, just a couple days over. I'm in Mpls now if that matters at all. Cheers.

Correction: PTP turn-around is SUPPOSED to be a week or less. Many departments have been playing fast and loose with that requirement for quite a few years now. I haven't heard of MPLS doing that, but I know there's at least 2 suburban cities that don't seem to mind ignoring the state mandated 7-day turnaround.

I'd say find ammo before you buy if you are doing a check. Unless you already have ammo, seems like .223 and 10mm are hard to find....for me atleast! I've been hunting for .223 or 5.56 and no luck. Only picked up two boxes of 5.56 at a gun show in stillwater a couple weeks back.

Scheels had a bunch of .223 this AM in St. Cloud -- at about a buck per round. No thanks.
