Funny Things Heard in the Gun Department

Postby MasonK on Sun Sep 01, 2013 7:14 pm

So I was making my regular rounds to check prices and availability of ammo in my local area and while browsing I heard the following exchange from behind the counter, in front of a customer...

"Hey John- what does 'Pre-Ban' mean? I heard Bob talking about it but I can't remember what he said."

"It means that on that rifle you can put in a full-auto trigger group and its legal."

[To the customer] "Yeah- so if you want to put a full-auto trigger in this you can."

I casually strolled over to the counter and saw a Colt SP1 (Pre-Ban) in the case with a tag of $1,600. The same sales kid behind the counter asked if I had any questions. I thought to myself "...clearly none that you are able to answer accurately."

LOL!

Those pre-ban guns are pretty cool!

Hoo boy... that's a doozy of an answer.

If only that were actually true! :D

Wow, that's sad.

Hell my 70 yr old mom knows what a pre-ban is.

I would have used my outside voice, not just thought it. I can never pass up a teaching moment for clerks when I can. It usually falls on deaf ears but occasionally it breaks through. If nothing else it keeps them away from me while I look.

If you think this is bad...

Just think how many anti-gun idiots there are out there who think you can just walk down to your local wally world and buy a full-auto AR?

Maybe even worse, how many think that ALL ARs and AKs are full-auto.

OK, So I am a noob.
What does Pre-ban mean? I've seen it pop up on websites like armalite.com and such when looking at AR-15s or AR-10s (mildly considering one for my next gun purchase)
So what does it mean?

Thanks smartass.
I can google things just fine. I was hoping to get a quick five minute answer and not have to spend hours looking around. Isn't that the point of coming to a message forum like this? If I just googled up every question or thought I had, then posting on here would be pointless.

Although you did add to my knowledge a little. Pre-ban only applies to AR-15s?

Not true, pre-ban also applies to Semi Automatic hand guns. The ban, banned all magazines that held more than 10 rounds.

Oh, so it's referring to the old "Assault weapon" ban, the one that is now expired. And that's why I also see "post-ban"

That'd make sense.

So now it is really no more than a marketing thing now. Since that ban expired those "pre-ban" features became legal to own again, so unless a future law references an exemption for guns prior to that ban, there really is no difference. I guess we could have the following models:

Pre-ban
Ban
Post ban

I actually own a Banned Glock. It came with 10 round mags. I quickly bought some pre-ban mags for it so it could mimic its pre-ban copy and then when the ban expired I purchased another 15 round mag new so technically, I supposed I have a rare convertible model glock that can be pre-ban, post ban, or ban. :cogitating: it's like 3 guns in one. Gotta be worth at least 2k then, it is LNIB with only a few thousand or more rounds threw it.

Pre ban firearms are worth more in NY. Or so I'm told.
