Conceal and Carry Permit Simple Questions

Postby MNSteveB on Sun Nov 24, 2013 1:15 am

I've done board searches and google searches and haven't exactly found my answer. Is it 75 or so for the class then an additional fee for the actual permit? Or does the permit come with the class, being that the paperwork for a permit is filed then. Is it usually 30 days to get the permit or is that just a general guide line. Lastly are all permits relatively the same being multi state? Thank you for the help!

You take the certificate from the class and go file it at the Sheriff's office. The cost of the permit is in addition to the cost of the training. The time it takes is entirely dependent on the county issuing, so if you live in a county with long times I feel bad for you. You cannot file your paperwork in a different county from where you live.

This depends on your local sherrif. By law they have to approve or deny within 30 days. I live in Scott cty and had my permit within one week. A friend of mine in Dakota cty took 30 days.

Great thank you. They processed my permit to purchase rather quickly so I have faith!

In response to your last sentence. No - depends on the class. I took a standard minnesota class since I was not interested in the others. Minnesota still covers a lot of states. There are maps available online.

multi state permit is a marketing term used by many as is the touted "national permit" which some instructors refer to the UT permit as. There are no such animals.
State permits are recognized in varying degrees by other states and the status can change anytime.

Use the links provided above to see where MN (or ?)is recognized

ETA: A MN permit in conjunction with UT or Fl gives about the best coverage available for the costs

I think you are confused on this. Permits to purchase are issued by the city police department while the permit to carry is issued by the county sheriff. So while you went to the City of Blaine Police for your Permit to Purchase you will have to apply for your Permit to Carry at the Anoka County Sheriff in Andover.

Exactly this; my local city's police department processed my purchase permit in less than a week, but the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department took almost 3 weeks for my carry permit, and I have *zero* criminal history - not even a parking ticket. Admittedly these events were separated by several years, but my address was the same the whole time, so I think it's still a relevant example of how things work.

somebody has to ask it....

Who was your instructor?

This should have been thoroughly covered in whatever class you took.

Your class certificate is nothing to do with a permit to purchase and only tells the sheriff that you took a class that met the BCA requirements of an approved class. The sheriff of your home county issues your permit to carry and the police chief or sheriff issues the permit to purchase. Both similar processes, but different agencies. Some of the smaller agencies just defer it to the local sheriff.

Reading the OP I do not believe he has taken a class yet.

I am also in Anoka county and they are good about processing them, if you figure about $150 for the class and permit you will be pretty close.
Have you picked out a handgun yet?

And, in theory, a police chief could be authorized by a sheriff to process carry permit applications. The sheriff would still be the agency that issues the permit. I haven't heard of any sheriff's doing this, though. They probably don't want to lose the income.

pretty sure the law states it must be the sheriff....

(c) An applicant must submit to the sheriff an application packet consisting only of the following items:

Yeah, but there's this...

Subd. 2.Where application made; authority to issue permit; criteria; scope.
...
(d) A sheriff may contract with a police chief to process permit applications under this section. If a sheriff contracts with a police chief, the sheriff remains the issuing authority and the police chief acts as the sheriff's agent. If a sheriff contracts with a police chief, all of the provisions of this section will apply.

I would think that would give the sheriff the authority to tell people to turn their applications in at the police station, but I'm not sure. You certainly can't take 'sheriff' literally, since we can submit applications to whoever is at the sheriff's office acting as his agent. At any rate, it's only worth talking about if you're really bored on a Sunday night. :)

What I should be doing is changing my picture. I can't even remember who that is.

Permits to purchase are issued by the city police department

Not universally true. Gordy (in Dundas, MN) refused to process mine. He refered me to Rice Co. Sheriff for the premit to PURCHASE. He did it two years in a row. It may have been his legal obligation to do it, but this occured before I was inclined to give a legal hoot.
