Sell or not to sell?

Postby JeffD on Tue Dec 10, 2013 8:20 am

Most of my buddies say "never sell a gun". I hear lots of people say that you should never sell a gun once you have it. I think these might be people that only have a few guns. My question is how many of you regret selling a gun. I know I see many posts here from people selling guns to fund a new one. I am thinking of doing the same :D I currently have 11 handguns and I like them all for different reasons. There are a few I do not shoot much. Should I sell them to fund a new project or just keep saving til I can buy it?

I just buy em to see what there like anyway, then I sell sell it and buy another one.
This way I gain knowledge for myself about what works and what doesn't.
Sometimes I keep one because it's suitable to Me.

I've sold/traded a number of them... small number in comparison with some folks I'm sure, but the only gun I've sold and then bought again was a Taurus TCP 738.

I have sold a number of firearms that I no longer enjoyed shooting, with no regrets whatsoever. Rather than have a gun that has fallen out of favour sit around gathering dust in your safe, why not just sell it to someone who will enjoy shooting it, and use the proceeds from the sale to help fund the acquisition of another firearm that interests you and which you might actually end up shooting more frequently? Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

I am on the don't sell bandwagon. I have yet to sell anything, and am very happy with it. However, this does mean I have not owned half the number of guns you guys have.

If you really don't enjoy a gun or don't shoot it at all then I don't see the point in keeping it if there is something else that you'd rather buy. I've sold a number of guns of my own, mainly because I would not be able to afford others that I wanted. Many of the sales were because I bought the gun to see if I liked it and I just didn't enjoy shooting them for one reason or another. Now i have guns that I enjoy shooting and want to take to the range and I know what sort of guns I don't like.

Do "Most of your buddies" and "lots of people" give reasons why to never sell a gun? Kind of hard to counter an argument if it's not presented.

I sell/trade for several reasons; Safe is full and I found a gotta-have. Trade mine I really like for his I really, really like. Bought a similar one that just fits my hand better. Like it but over time realize it's rarely/never amongst the ones chosen to shoot. Or it's art - a looker not a shooter and it's time to redecorate. These last are the hardest to part with. I get emotionally attached to a model 1897 riot gun or Nam era SP-1. Functional, yes, but passed by in utility by newer tech. I may just have to buy a second "Gallery" safe for these. But we all know where that leads.

First I don't buy them unless I have a strong interest in them, so in turn I don't sell them. In my youth 35 years ago I sold a Marlin 22 lever action and a Ruger Mark II. I was in college and needed cash, I think I got $100 each. Looking back it was dumb, I would pay double to have both back. The Mark II I recently replaced with a new Mark III. I have never found the model of Marlin I had that was in good enough condition to purchase.

I've only sold one.

It was redundant, and not as nice as what I replaced it with...and I still miss it. Not enough to replace, and it isn't needed...just one of those things.

Anything that does not get used on a regular basis has been sold. I sold off all of my semi autos except one because they didn't get used. The one I have will be on the sale block soon.

Over the course of my adult life, I have sold eight guns, and traded one in on a different gun. Of those, seven have been in the last five years. The only one I regret selling is a Bersa .380.

Sell them. You don't really know how well you will like any gun until you've had it for awhile, and you aren't going to love all of them. Keep the ones you really like and sell the others to buy more that you really like. I've only ever bought one back after selling it, and I ended up selling it again later. I only have a couple that I wouldn't sell, and mainly because I use them too much. I'd sell those too, if the price was right. I don't know why some folks get so emotionally invested, they aren't children, and they are making plenty more.

Not necessarily if it's a Winchester or older Colt, etc. Sell those and you may never find a replacement.....at least at a price you like.
