SBR Engraving

Postby hal on Thu Jan 30, 2014 1:52 pm

Does anyone know of anyone locally that can engrave an SBR. They would have to have the experience to engrave an SBR to ATF specifications. Orion-Arms, in Lino Lakes does it, but you can not drop off the receiver, you must mail via UPS and pay shipping both ways.

I use Ident Marking in Texas. They're cheaper and quicker.

Does anyone know the depth spec for the engraving and the text to be used?

.003 inch depth, minimum 1/16 inch high. Must be readily visible without disassembling the rifle. Can be engraved on barrel, frame, or receiver. I always opt for inside the trigger well.

It's all in the NFA handbook section 7.4

7.4.2 Additional information
. Certain additional information must
also be conspicuously placed on
the frame, receiver, or barrel of the firearm by engr
aving, casting, stamping (impressing), that is, they
must be placed in such a manner that they are
wholly unobstructed from plain view. For firearms
manufactured on or after January
30, 2002, this information must be to
a minimum depth of .003 inch.
The additional information includes:

(1) The model, if such designation has been made;
(2) The caliber or gauge;
(3) The manufacturer’s name
(or recognized abbreviation); and
(4) The city and State (or recognized abbrevia
tion) where the manufacturer maintains its place
of business.

I know you said you did not want to use Orion since you have to ship but they had it back to me in a week.

I've never been worried about the time it took for the engraving. Shoot, we're at 9 months or more as the time frame for getting a stamp back. Plenty of time to get the engraving done. I send the receiver off for engraving around the same time I send in the Form 1.

I've used Orion on both of my SBRs, and it looks like a factory job. Turn around time has been within a week or two.

Thanks folks. Looks like I'll use Orion. Question - My PS90 currently has a dowel rod in it waiting for the barrel to come back. Obviously not a good way to ship/handle. Can I put the barrel back on and THEN send the upper there?

Orion requires the receiver of a PS90 to be completely stripped.

You can send it via UPS only. They're 07 FFL /02 SOT, so it's legal for them to receive an SBR for "repair". Not sure how UPS works. IIRC, a firearm has to be sent by 2nd Day Air.
