The maximum time to issue a renewal permit is the same as to issue a new permit. 30 days. Some counties send out permits as soon as they are issued, some counties wait the full 30 days before sending them out.

Since you let your prior permit expire, they may charge an extra $10 ($75 max. for a renewal plus an extra $10) if you renew it within 30 days that your prior permit expires. If you apply for a renewal after 30 days, it is treated as a new permit and up to $100 for that permit. You can apply for a renewal permit up to 90 days before your current permit expires. The issue date will be the date of your current permit expires plus 5 years. You will not loose any time because you renew early. Even if you apply early, they have 30 days to issue the permit after the date you apply.

The background check for a renewal is the same as for a new permit.

Your permit has expired and you CANNOT carry until the renewal is issued.
Because I care, I carry.

In your case, in Hennepin County, which DOES suck, and where if you call up and ask them about AR's they will tell you that assault rifles are illegal in their county, you might just was well stay bent over expect to wait 32 days because they won't mail it until the 30th day at 4:59 PM.

I have had varied experiences in Washington County, and Sheriff Bill Hutton is a stand-up guy who endorses civilian carry. He replaced my old Sheriff Jim "sub recoso" Frank permit in three days flat because he didn't want any documents out of his office with that boolshyte written on them. At the same time, my renewal took 28 days, so maybe the department was busy. I know it wasn't because they just sat on it. There are some counties out there who regularly do it in shorter times, but I can't remember which ones.

The number of permits to carry in the state has more than doubled in the past year. I'd assume that what has likely happened is they got swamped with requests and your renewal got bogged down in the mess. My best advice is to go to the sheriff's office and inquire about the state of your application. Be nice and patient when talking to the secretaries and be calm but firm if you get to talk to anyone higher up. Remember that you aren't the only one who's complained to them about this.

You can only push citizens so far...it just boils down to what's right, and I am tired of dealing with what's not right.

Who was it again that let their permit expire, when they had a 90 day renewal window?

Defending the process verses articulating the process are in this case, mutually exclusive.

I think my renewal in Scott Cty was 8-10 days.
Of course it helps to be a smaller county with a gun friendly Sheriff.
