Purse/ccw pistol for wife

Postby unknown on Wed Apr 30, 2014 7:30 am

Hi there,

Mothers day is quickly approaching and I am thinking on getting the wife her own pistol. She has mentioned in the past that she would like something small (palm size big)

She often travels with our girls at night so reliability is important. I had my hopes up on the r54 but the reviews dont seem very positive.

Any recommendations?

Thank you

How about one of these in hammerless. +P in .38 , great single action trigger and about as reliable as you can get. Light.
Add some Gold Dots or HSTs, perhaps the laser model, pocket holster, PRACTICE. Can be VERY bad news for bad guys..

Rethink the purse idea. Too much extra responsibility and really not very accesible.

Bring her to the gun shop on mothers day and have her pick out what gun she wants. After all you would not want her to pick out what gun she thinks you would want.

My wife has shot my Airweight Pro. Simple, reliable, great form factor. She did not enjoy the experience, especially shooting the +P. OTOH, she really likes her Walther PPS and shoots it fairly regularly at the Fleet Farm indoor range. I agree, the PPS is definitely an easier gun to shoot. I have one as well...both have been completely reliable. Excellent concealed carry pistol and vastly superior to any .38 revolver as a defensive firearm.

I would look at something like the Glock 42, or any other pocket 380.

Take her someplace and let her shoot as many as she likes and chooses.

Make a day of it and dinner/lunch to go with it. My wife picked her pistol because its what she can function. To heck with what I suggested.

Several Ranges are having Mother's Day deals - seems like a good opportunity. I agree with what others have said - let her shoot/pick her own. There have been several threads on selecting a gun for your S/O - some of the best quotes I've seen have been along the lines of:

You wouldn't pick out shoes for your wife

and

Nothing worse than hinting you want a .45(think 1911) and having someone give you a .45 GAP Glock in some obscene color.

Thank you for your thoughts, I think a date night at the range it is. It would also be a great opportunity to point something out for father's day!

My wife is a small little gal... and she HATES the Sig P238 (.380) and the Beretta 92FS (9mm)... but she much prefers to handle and fire the Dan Wesson CCO 1911 (.45). She also likes the Glock 23 (.40), but not as much as a 1911.

So maybe she doesn't necessarily want/ need a "smaller" CCW pistol/ caliber. ;) Have her try a variety of calibers and sizes.

I am on the North end but if you wanted to head this way I could meet you and let you try a G42 and S&W Bodyguard.

This is a serious post. VERY serious, considering your wife's life is on the line!! Husbands and SO's are the WORST possible people to pick out a gun for a woman!! Yes, you know about guns, but that's about it.

Proof: Wanna bet me $50 $100 that you could go into a woman's shoe store and pick out in advance the EXACT pair of shoes she will buy once she goes in there and starts shopping herself?? What was that?? You wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of doing that??

Get your wife hooked up with sawgrass and wrench, who are instructors and members here, and DO have a clue about both handguns and what women like. While your wife is talking to them, you can go down to the Beach Bar in Lakeland and have a beer. I will warn you that sawgrass has Prada tastes in handguns, so you might want to set a price limit.

But seriously, this subject has come up so many times, and I have seen so many guys screw this process up that it isn't funny.
