PD chief "purchase permits take more than 5 business days"

Postby compconsultant on Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:35 am

So, I went to apply at my local PD for a permit to purchase last Thursday. I ask for a receipt. I had a copy of the receipt form that the state supplies. The lady at the desk freaks out, says we don't do that. I insist. The police chief is standing right next to her. She asks him what to do. I tell him I want the permit because I heard other police departments were not following the law and taking longer than five business days. He angrily says, "I guarantee you will not get it in five days". He tells the desk lady to fill out the receipt.

So, if I don't get the permit by Friday what should I do?

1. Nothing
2. Call the police chief
3. Complain to the city manager (the chief reports to the city manager)
4. Complain to the mayor (the city manager reports to the mayor)
5. Complain at the city council meeting next Teusday
6. options 2-5 in order

Contact the City Attorney and point out the statute the Police Chief is not complying with. Trust me, I know that when the City Attorney tells the PD to do something, they do it.

Excellent, another idea. I don't think the city attorney cares, but it may be worth a shot.

I was just looking at the statute and see that it says seven days and not five business days. In this case, they are the same.

A colleague of mine who lives in White Bear Lake recently applied for a PtP at the PD there. He got the permit after three weeks. He didn't know about the 7-day requirement, though.

He may not care about guns, but he cares about the city getting sued for failure to comply.

Odd how that works. When the police chief or other public officials don't follow the law they're "not complying" when I do it I'm "breaking the law" or at least "violating the law." Not complying makes it sound more discretionary or optional. He didn't have time to follow the letter of the law...wish I could use that defense.

For Christ's sake, what's with you people? Pedantic drivel that helps the OP not a bit. Would it have made any damn difference to the advice if I'd have said 'violating' or 'breaking'?

Get your panties in a bunch over something worth the effort.

Get bent. Better yet, go start another 'I told you so' thread so you can feel all oppressed and vindicated. Otherwise, if you have nothing constructive to assist the OP I suggest you wind your neck in.

Persecution complex or something? I simply point out that the standard in society seems to be public officials "don't comply" but if a private citizen does the same thing they "break or violate the law" to which Widge, in my opinion, made a slightly excited response and I said he should consider decaf. WTF is wrong with that? Personal insult? I suggest you read it again without the hyperactive "he's out to get me" glasses.

The guy gave you solid advice, and should be thanked. Instead you throw it back in his face, and insult him. Once again, instead of having a rational conversation, you opt for the irrational confrontation which is exactly the same type of school girl drama crap that spawned the 11 page **** fest you so maturely labelled with "I told you so"

Does that help explain?
