I assume that you can carry there, you just have to make sure no else knows that you are carrying.

I could be wrong, but I think some lawyers would have to be totally asleep not to cover that one. The hospice I work at DOES have that sign, for whatever purpose it serves, but I can't really remember if there were signs at Bethesda St. Paul or Gillette Childrens. I would assume there were until I saw otherwise with my own eyes. At Bethesda a gun was no good with the only real danger, which was an Alzheimer's patient going completely off the reservation and getting severely violent. In most of those cases, Sasha would settle those people down in 30 seconds or less, so just the concept of having a gun was a feeble joke. To look at it from the other side, what possible situation could you REASONABLY expect to run into in a hospital with 24/7 video security where you could discharge your weapon and reasonably claim fear of death or GBH??

I don't think that's the point. There are many places in the state, probably MOST places in the state, where there is no REASONABLE fear of being involved in a situation where "you could discharge your weapon and reasonably claim fear of death or GBH". Statistically, such a scenario is extremely unlikely everywhere, not just the U of M. In the OP's case, he's chosen, for whatever personal reason, to exercise his rights and live an armed lifestyle. That means that if he wants to visit the U of M, he has forego that aspect of his personal protection plan, not to mention the fact that he has to lock his gun in his car and hope it doesn't get broken into and stolen.

I go there every week and have noticed they have the no gun signs at most, but not all entrances. Personally, I've never considered carrying beyond the parking area.

I carry the places I think I WON'T need a gun. I may be WRONG, and don't want to suddenly need to defend my self or loved ones and not have one of the best means to do so.

The places I think I will NEED a gun, is what the police are for. Call them to go in first or accompany you.
Because I care, I carry.

U of M Medical Center.

Postby jshuberg on Sun Mar 15, 2015 1:22 pm

The U of M can restrict carry for students and staff, but not for the general public. They are a public university, receive taxpayer dollars, and cannot ban carry in the same way that other government facilities cannot ban carry. Students and staff have voluntarily entered into a contract, where they have accepted that they cannot carry. For them to carry can result in being fired or expelled, etc. but it is not a criminal offense.

I've heard it stated, although I have no firsthand knowledge, that the U of M claims that they *can* prohibit carry, without regard to 624.714 because they enjoy a special legal status in the MN constitution. I don't believe there has been a test case.

All this being said I would generally advise against carrying at the U of M, and that if you choose to, to deeply conceal. If anyone notices, the place will likely go on lockdown, SWAT teams will likely be called, and you'll get your 15 minutes of fame on the national news.

Legal doesn't necessarily mean smart, and college campuses are particularly sensitive when it comes to carry.

Remember that they sold the U of MN hospitals to Fairview.

It is NOT a public owned/Government facility, despite it being on the U of MN campus.

I can't believe the number of gun rights folks around here who advocate violating someone else's property rights... geez.

Also, the government property clause is not complete. There are lots of places that are government property that firearms are banned- and rightly so. Prisons, jails, secure mental health and CD facilities, etc.

We need to be reasonable. Knee jerk reactions ("its OK if they don't catch me") etc. don't help. Look what boneheads did with the Sig Brace for how quickly reasonable things can be taken away.

The Clinic I use isn't

ETA:

Back when I was going to the U there were frequent muggings/ armed robberies in some of the larger parking lots; in an era when such incidents were not as commonplace as today.

I'm never knew that, but I'm not surprised. The MIB (Men in Black) all have military and/or police backgrounds, and I have seen them escorting a skel to two back to the security offices, and there are occasional flyers discreetly posted on desks where you normally can't see them with pictures of persons of interest.

Gotta agree with crbutler's statement, and just because you can doesn't mean you should. With pretty much all hospital parking ramps, those places are wired to the teeth, so the chances of somebody picking YOUR car and breaking in for something that is hidden such as a gun are pretty minimal. You leave your iPhone on the dashboard, and that's another story...

Well, turns out it is Fairview and not U of M. The cop I saw said, he never asks, unless he sees open carry. Now I know. I locked it up first anyway, but, yeah it's the U of M med center, but Fairview Hostpital. Didn't even see a posting, just assumed U of M.............................NOT!

U of M Medical Center.

Postby jshuberg on Sun Mar 15, 2015 4:31 pm

I'm not familiar with the medical facility there, but it sounds like several people agree that it's not a U of M facility. If that's the case they can prohibit carry just like any other private property.

My previous statements still apply to actual U of M facilities.

Well, yeah I assumed it was part of the college, that was easy, no carry. But, since it's Fairview and private, conceal, and Fk the signs! lol
