Help needed with gunstock.

Postby M4A1 on Mon Mar 23, 2015 7:12 pm

Hello

I have a laminate gunstock that I'm trying to finish. I had someone do some work on it, but the mill broke, and it doesn't seem that it's going to be fixed anytime soon.
I was wondering if someone around here has a mill and the knowledge to do what I'm looking for.

All help would be appreciated.

Little more info/pictures would help... you can use a drill press as a mill also.

As far as the drill press goes, is's out of the question. I had my fair share of drill press experience to know that the capabilities of a press are exceeded in this case.
The stock is 33 inches long and pretty heavy. It will need a longer table and two vises to keep it in place and minimize vibrations. The machine needs at least 3000 rpm at the spindle to make nice, clean cuts. The chatter in the dril press puts it at a greater disadvantage.

This is how I would like it to look: http://www.6mmbr.citymaker.com/i/Blogs/ ... 02x560.jpg
I know some of the mills are able to inject the red color also :D

I have an extension table for my drill press for long materials that is pretty solid. Built it from 80/20 aluminum extrusions and it bolts to the drill press and has adjustable legs at the ends. I use it for antenna work where I have to drill long antenna booms.

RPM is a problem but slower more careful cuts do work. It does require a press with good bearings and not much wobble.
