Maryland

Postby dismal on Tue Apr 28, 2015 11:14 pm

So, I get to go to Maryland next week. (Not Baltimore though :D ). I know I can't carry there, but as I'm driving out there I do want something in my car. Excluding Il, I'm GTG in all the states that I'm driving through, just MD worries me. From what I've read, it sounds like I can transport there, assuming it's not an "assault weapon", so I'm thinking of taking a revolver, and just lock it in the hotel safe when I get there. Anyone have any thoughts or info?

You can transport through Maryland, but once you stop you're no longer "transporting" and are subject to Maryland state law and all of the various local laws of all the cities and towns you pass through.

One of the state laws allows you to transport a firearm to and from a repair shop. If I were in a situation where I had to bring a firearm into Maryland I would find a repair shop near my hotel and make an appointment to drop my firearm off for repair. I would have this appointment well documented and have the documentation readily available. Once I hit the border I'd drive directly to the repair shop and drop it off. Picking it back up would be the last thing I do on my way out of the state. I'd have the firearm disassembled, in a lock box, and inconspicuously stored in the trunk. I might even dispose of my ammunition before crossing the state line into MD.

I would take a good look at MD's laws. Some states allow you to keep a loaded gun in the car or in the hotel. It can get super sticky tho.

Pump action shotgun, buck shot, trunk, unloaded. Or don't travel to places that are known to be unsafe.

DO NOT put anything in a hotel safe. Get a lock box or GunVault with a security cable attachment and attach the lockbox to a static anchor point, like around the base of a toilet, around the P-trap pipe under a sink, or to a bed frame if it's sturdy enough.

Hotel safes are easily broken into because there are override codes and procedures that allow housekeeping to get into the safe. Not every hotel has a protocol to keep housekeeping from getting into the safe, and even then, there are shifty managers.

Yep, I'm finding the laws to be a bit unclear.

Unfortunately, I don't have a shotty. Might be a good excuse to get one though... :ugeek:

Understood, I got one of these on order:

And replacing the strap with one of these:

Per this discussion:

It's a pretty fancy hotel so I'm assuming that makes it a bit safer, or maybe there will just be more capable crooks.

You should reconsider bringing a firearm into MD until the laws are clear to you. My understanding of the law is that you can not legally have a firearm in your car. It doesn't matter if it's unloaded and locked in the trunk. MD does not have state preemption, so you are also subject to whatever the laws are in every single MD jurisdiction your travel through.

Reading the good ol' Handgunlaw.us page for MD one of the things that jumps out at me is:

§ 15-203. Providing of Lodging and Services
(a) Refusal. -- An innkeeper may refuse to provide lodging or services to or may remove from a lodging
establishment an individual who:
(6) the innkeeper reasonably believes possesses property that may be dangerous to other individuals, such as
firearms or explosives; or

So that tells me any thought of putting it in a hotel safe is a terrible idea if you want to actually spend the night.

I would probably start just by calling the Maryland State Police Licensing Division. Hopefully they can tell you real quick if you should just give up hope or perhaps they can at least give you a rundown of the laws you would need to be concerned with based on your anticipated activities.

mrp according to the docs at Handgunlaw MD DOES have state preemption with only a few exemptions so laws in individual jurisdictions should not be much of a problem. Those exemptions are:
(i) with respect to minors;
(ii) with respect to law enforcement officials of the subdivision; and
(iii) except as provided in paragraph (2) of this subsection, within 100 yards of or in a park, church,
school, public building, and other place of public assembly.

Also keep in mind it looks like they have a high capacity magazine ban so you would want to leave anything that can take over 10 rounds at home.

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2014/0 ... -maryland/

The officer, who was from the Transportation Authority Police, Maryland’s version of the NY Port Authority, orders Mr. F out of the vehicle, took him back behind the SUV and ordered him to hook his thumbs behind his back and spread his feet. Then, according to Mr. F, he heard the officer say something he never expected. “You own a gun. Where is it?”
