I'm looking at buying a 22 pistol & rifle, My first.
Confused about ammo.
Is 22 short ammo for the pistol & 22 long for the rifle?
Can short or long be used in both guns?

Most modern pistols and rifles are chambered for .22LR. That chamber can fire short, long or long rifle.

.22WMR is a completely different cartridge.

Ruger would seem to disagree with you. My 10/22 manual says this:

The RUGER® 10/22® CARBINE and 10/22 Rifles are chambered for,
and designed to properly function with, only the 22 caliber Long Rifle rimfire
cartridge, standard, high velocity, or hyper-velocity, manufactured to U.S.
industry standards.
Do not use 22 short, 22 long, 22 shot, or 22 cartridges loaded with blunt-nosed,
sharp-shouldered, or “explosive” bullets. They will not function reliably and may
jam the mechanism or discharge before being fully chambered. Use only
ammunition that functions correctly in your rifle. See “Warning – Malfunctions,”

The bottom line is that you need to read the manual for whatever gun you buy before loading ammo into it to avoid the possibility of injuring yourself or others by using the wrong ammo.

Theyll shoot. youll have problems cycling

wouldn't this cause problems, like the opposite of what the short ones would do? at least if the gun 'wants' long rifle not one of those I bet there probably is something out there that would eat it all outside wmr .22-bolt action? do shorts have less oomph so they could (whats the word for getting stuck in the barrel) #squib. are longs likely to squib cause they are bigger(more grains)?

22 short, long and long rifle are effectively 3 different cartridges, your firearm manufacturer will specify which one(s) is/are compatible. In general, semi auto rifles and pistols won't cycle shorts or 22 long reliably without a special spring kit and may not feed correctly.

Many single shot or tube fed rifles and revolvers will usually work with all 3.

The most common is 22 Long Rifle, not 22 Long. And i cant remember seeing any 22 Shorts at all lately. Just make sure they are chambered the same( odds are 22LR ) and both guns will shoot the same ammo.
