Your carry setup then and now.

Postby fine ape on Mon Oct 26, 2015 5:35 pm

I was going through my bin of holsters the other day, and i got to thinking about how my edc setup has "evolved" over the years.

So I thought it might be interesting to see how others edc setup have changed.
To keep it simple just list what your first edc setup was and what your current one is.

Then
Gun: Taurus M85 38spl +P
Ammo: Remington UMC 125gr sjhp 38spl +P
Holster: Uncle Mikes pocket holster
Extra: HKS speed loader

Now
Guns: S&W Bodyguard 380, and or M&P 9c
Ammo: Hornady critical defense 95gr fxt 380, Speer 115gr Gold Dot 9mm.
Holsters: 380, Bianchi 22 Wallet Profile Pocket Holster, M&P DeSantis intruder iwb.
Extra: Blackhawk Dubble stack mag pouch.
Guns are not the problem, people are the problem. And short of lobotomizig everyone who has a bad thought they will continue to be for the forseeable future.

No evolution whatsoever. Custom molded leather holster from a guy out West with a bulge in the edge for the Crimson Trace grips, 50GI 7+1, 300 grain Gold Dots doing 900 FPS, two extra mags and a box of ammo in the truck. If it ain't broke, why fix it??

Then
Gun: Charles Daly Field Pistol (full size 1911).
Ammo: Federal EFMJ.
Holster: Blade-Tech Fits-All (i.e. open muzzle) Kydex IWB.
Extra: usually none. I had a Fobus 2-mag carrier for IDPA but it felt too bulky for concealed carry.

Now
Gun: Ruger SP101 2.25"
Ammo: "Buffalo Barnes" solid copper HP 125gr .357 Magnum.
Holster: MD-5 Sticky Holster IWB (Amazingly convenient).
Extra: So-called "Speed Strip" in pants pocket in the summer, Safariland Comp-I speed loader in jacket or vest pocket in cooler weather.

or sometimes:

Gun: Ruger GP100 3"
Ammo: Same as for SP101.
Holster: Home-modified Comp-Tac MTAC IWB.
Extra: "Speed Strip", or Safariland Comp-II speed loader.

I was a big Miami Vice Fan back in the day.

Bianchi Shoulder Rig with a S&W Model 10 2" Brl from 1987 to 1993, Then a Sig P228/M11 from 1993-2005.

Now is it a Sideguard OWB Exotic with either a Sig 1911, P239 or P938 depending on the weather.

I think of all that gear I have one or two rounds of the Starfire rattling around the ammo shelf.

EAJuggalo brings up a couple good points: first, How long ago was 'Then'; and second, what belt?

For me, 'Then' was 2005, and my belt was some generic 1.5" leather belt. I didn't think it mattered with an IWB holster. I was wrong.

'Now', for about 7 years, I've been wearing a Looper Leather reinforced belt. It shows no sign of wearing out anytime soon.

Although, with the Sticky holster, the belt doesn't matter as much.

Wow getting some good comments comments.
Can't believe I left out belts
Hopefully Sam doesn't come back to tear me a new one for being such a noob

"Then" was 09
Belt: cheep friction lock web belt. It worked for pocket carrying just the M85, but not so well for IWB with the M&P. Actually now that I think of it I've changed belts more offen than anything else.

Use to get whatever looked well built and passed a little test i picked up from Cobb.
1: Buckle the belt in the air at the hole that the belt fit you.
2: Hold the belt loop in one hand opposite of the buckle.
3: Lift the belt so it is parallel to the ground.
4: Check how much it sags.

NOW
Belt: Simply Rugged Laminated Leather Gun Belt.
I've worn it every day for 3 years and its still going strong. Works well carrying my 5906 or GP100.
The fact its lasted for more than a year can only mean one of two things.
1. Its a quality made belt.
2. Im a cheep bugger that needed to spend more than $15 on a belt.
