Rochester public trapshooting range?

Postby onebohemian on Thu Aug 04, 2016 7:24 pm

I need a public range in or around Rochester to shoot a few rounds of trap with my kid on Saturday. The website for the one range I found south of Rochester says members only. Any suggestions? Willing to drive a bit to get somewhere we can shoot.

Thanks,
Mark

Pine Island White Pines Sportsmans Club might be worth a call.

PIWPSC, doesn't offer day passes. You can come out on thursday night and shoot trap if you are member of the public, but it's a member only club on non-league days.

I think you will find nearly all the ranges around Rochester are members only. The revenue brought in by selling day passes doesn't justify the increased risk of walk in traffic damaging equipment or worse throwing a round over the berm. We want everyone shooting to go through orientation, and feel like they have stake in the future of the club.
Southern Minnesota was the last club to offer walk on memberships, and they stopped that several years ago due to safety concerns.

If I were you I would stick your name on the waiting list for PIWPSC, we have a really nice trap thrower for members to use, and the club facilities are top notch.

On a side note sending an email is going to be much more effective then calling the club. We don't have people manning the phones 24/7.

I think we are seeing an average wait time of 4 months for membership currently, but our secretary will be able to give you a better estimate.

What is your definition of driving a bit - south Twin Cities metro has a couple of clubs.

You could try Stewartville Sportsmens Club. I am not a member anymore, so don't know the particulars. Grand Meadow also has a trapshooting range.

Dodge Center has a nice little facility. I believe Wednesday nights are trap league and just about any other time is members only (not staffed). Stop at the DC Hardware Hank for a membership on Saturday before you go.

You would need to throw/launch your own clays (they lock the trap houses when not in use). The trap range is up the hill from the pistol and rifle ranges, which means that if someone else is using those you wouldn't be able to use the trap area.

Membership fees are relatively cheap, and well worth it, in my option - even if you only shoot there 1-2 times a year.

This facility largely depends on people to follow the rules and clean up after themselves. So, please pick up your empty shells and be aware that your actions could be used against the club in the future.

FWIW, I have also used the Zumbrota range, but was a guest and don't remember the exact location or where to get memberships. They do have a trap range, but like Dodge Center it's un-staffed except for leagues.

Neither Zumbrota nor Dodge Center have day passes - it's an annual membership. However, at least in the case of Dodge Center, I think you will find the annual membership fee very reasonable, and on-par with what you'd typically pay for about an hour for a single lane at an indoor range in the Twin Cities.

Lastly, the NSSF has an app for that. I think it's called Find Ranges, and it's pretty up to date. That might help you locate ranges where you didn't know one existed.
