POLL: How often do you carry?

Postby linksep on Fri Aug 05, 2016 10:40 pm

Just curious.

Mods: I put this in "General Gun Chat" to capture votes from sportsmen/women that may have PTC but maybe don't even own a handgun and never read the "Carry Issues" section as it wouldn't pertain to them. Hopefully at least two mods confer and agree before this gets moved to "Carry Issues" if it does get moved.

I realize this is an "enthusiast" forum so results will likely be skewed to the high-end. I'm still curious.

Unless I'm going someplace that specifically won't allow me to carry, by law (ex. Post office, school grounds), I have it with me. If I know it's a place where it's prohibited by policy, but there's no detectors or wanding (mall of America), I'm carrying. If I'm running out for milk, I'm carrying. Now, if I go anywhere with my wife and daughter, I'll carry my glock 42 as a back up (I will give it to my daughter in case of emergency) AND, I put my AR 300blk pistol in the car, too.

I refuse to allow myself or family to become victims. I may be become a statistic, but not the kind you're thinking of.

POLL: How often do you carry?

I absolutely always carry. I just don't go places I'm not supposed to carry. There are small situations that I go without, but those are usually if I might get a drink with friends. If alcohol is involved then I absolutely do not carry.

I am armed at all times, at night there is a .357 under my pillow and a mag loaded 1100 rem. leaning against the dresser, there is also a .357 hidden in the bathroom. When I'm up there is a .45 or a 9 mil. on my belt or in a pocket, I open carry mostly and in seven years have not had a problem with that. I do not carry in schools and one or two other places.
At the gym I carry a fanny pack and if any one were to ask I would say "health keeping stuff".

Yesterday I was cutting the vines and brush growing in the fence along my front walk, I was using a Gurkha kukri which I consider the best brush cutter but they are nasty looking things, there was also a .45 on my belt.
The 4-6 year old kids from down the block were running back and forth past me and their mother was cleaning the van in front of the house, then a lady I had never seen before came by walking her big black dog, I stopped chopping before she got to me because I have seen dogs get a wee bit upset when you make sudden moves close to their owner, I said 'hello" and we talked about the weather and she went on her way. So yes, I,m armed at all times and have not had a problem with that

I carry sometimes, usually if I'm going to the Big City (Brainerd/Baxter or larger) as long as the inconvenience doesn't outweigh the risk. At home, guns are locked up (grandchildren).

Not when I'm drinking and I find myself more often forgoing wine for coffee at a restaurant so I don't have to go naked. At home I keep a pistol in each leg of my Y shaped house so as not to be trapped at one end without if the door is suddenly kicked in. Always take a gun if going into the basement.

Family cookouts with lots of kids all are in the safe, but I know my teetotalling sister and husband are strapped then.
I don't leave any guns hidden 24/7 as I fear forgetting about them when kids are visiting.

I truthfully don't feel any need to carry. I'm at pretty much no risk at home, or at work, or anywhere else I usually go. If there were some place I was considering going where I wouldn't feel safe unless I was carrying, I'd seriously consider going someplace else.

That said, while I judge my risk to be very low, at present, I understand that can change very quickly. I came home from work, one day, and find my house mate had invited a friend to sleep on my couch. Her abusive ex has just walked away from a medium security treatment facility, and she was afraid to go home. She stayed with us for some weeks, until she'd finished the term.

During that time my risk of being the victim of a home invasion increased dramatically, and you can be sure I carried, and made sure my house mate knew where all the guns were. (The friend, I judged, was in no emotional state to be carrying, at the time.)

In any case, while I judge my risk to be low, so I may not always carry, if it's inconvenient, I make sure that I'm always ready to begin carrying on short notice, should my risk change. This means always having a carry pistol loaded and ready, along with holster, belt, spare mags, etc., nearby. It's one of the reasons that I always mount a gun safe in my car.

If I feel I NEED to carry somewhere, I do not go there or that is what the police are for (to escort me there).

I carry for the places I DO NOT feel a need to carry. I may be wrong and need protection. The criminal will choose their location to attack. Not me.

If I MUST visit a prohibited location, I lock the gun in the vehicle. I try to avoid all prohibited locations.

At home, guns are locked in safes or lockboxes around the house.

You probably need another category to vote: "I do not give a damn what the law is. I do not have a permit and carry anyway."
Because I care, I carry.

This is absolutely disgraceful to have to admit to, but...

I used to carry more often than not, wearing 3x shirts so I wouldn't print.

Only now I've gained so much weight, I print in a 3x shirt.

Now that I'm employed again, once I can take the time for tactical training I may go with a gun pouch.
