My daughter forgot how to operate her 10-22

Postby hard h2o on Sun Apr 09, 2017 10:05 pm

Had my daughter out to OGC with her grandpa. We bought the Luger, Glock .40 S&W, Ruger LC9s, S&W M&P .45c, Marlin 795, and her Ruger 10-22.

First thing I got her set up on a bench with the 10-22. She hadn't shot in a while but she got into the swing and after ensuring all was well I got about setting up the benches for grandpa and me. She was working from an open bulk box of Winchester .22

She had a stoppage and called me over. I dropped the mag, cleared the stoppage and got her back up and running. I looked at her bench and she had a small pile of unspent .22 ammo. I asked her what was up and she said those were the ones that "came out" of the rifle. I said that was not right. I picked up an expended .22 and said these should be the ones coming out. She said that the unfired ones came out when she worked the handle. I said just squeeze the trigger, the rifle will do the work. She then said that it did seem like her 10 round magazines were going quick. She was getting 5 rounds of pew-pew for every 10 rounds she loaded into a magazine. I think the stoppage was fortuitous and a result of how she was working the bolt after each shot.

Love that girl.

Interesting. I'm lucky to get off 5 shots on my 10/22 without having to work the bolt.

Her 10-22 runs just fine as long as it is kept clean.

I favor the Marlin. It runs better and is more accurate. Less aftermarket stuff to doll it up or make it tacticool but I do not see a need for that stuff.

I have spent many hours on the range with my daughter (now 19 and at the U). She loves my 1911's and my AR. I think it is very important to teach your kids to shoot, as at some point in their lives they will encounter a gun - And they know it isn't all that scary.

Was going to go trap shooting this evening. Didn't work out so the boy (13 yo) and I just took the .22s and the .45 to the 25 yard range.

When I was out with the daughter she could not even manage the trigger pull on the S&W M&P 45C. I loaded up 1 round for the boy to try. He had no problem. He went through a few mag fulls. He was hitting the target and have a good time.

Of course later he had to lord it over the daughter.

Great bonding time.
