Very cool to see this sport grow so rapidly. It's got everything going for it, and I think it's easy for people to support it. This is great for everyone, not the least of which are the kids who get to participate instead of warming a bench.

Also good for the the ranges & clubs... drives membership & trap fees which helps the clubs expand, update, modernize, etc. (not to mention teaching a few millennials that guns don't have feelings & malice built in).

I would argue that a little. The high school season is pretty short and after season I do not see many of the kids at the range. My observation has been that it puts quite the strain on the club to handle the burst of demand and often the club's regular members who shoot year round are get pushed to the side to please the high schools.

OGC just built two additional trap ranges specifically to accommodate the boom in HS trap. They've trained the coaches on the throwers, and they're handling the additional load very well. Not to mention these kids come back with their families on weekends and Tuesday nights when the club is open to the public.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Not to mention that these kids will be indoctrinated by the public school system and the college system and be voting age soon so we can either hope their college professors explain to them the benefits of gun ownership or take an active role ourselves.

I can, anecdotally, point at two kids who were trap shooting at OGC last year, and came down to the 100 (escorted) to see what the club looked like. I was shooting something that looked like fun, we got to talking, and they got a chance to shoot an M1 Garand.

Smiles. Intrigue. New shooters? Maybe.

I too was shooting at OGC last year, on the 200 meter range, and had a few kids escorted to see what all the "noise was". I was shooting my 50 Cal and they were very interested. I let the kids and their escorts shoot a couple rounds. They all, had what we call the "50 Grin" and were very thankful. The kids were especially inquisitive and were amazed we could own and shoot 50's here in MN, and the USA.

I can understand your frustration. That said, I can see the potential for the (re)-normalization of the shooting sports. With that, and additional demand for shooting facilities, we could see more clubs, or ranges or at least more support for the ones we have. Although it will take a while for the return on investment, as the kids\, pay off student loans, find decent jobs, and have some expendable income to spend at the facilities.

With the firearm being the great equalizer and trap being a sport of skill versus size and strength, we also now have the potential for male and female shooters to compete directly. From an "equality stand point", I am not sure any other high school sport provides this opportunity. I think this is a massive positive for the sport.

Remember too the state stepped out with matching funds that allowed our club to replace trap throwers and other gear. Prior to this match we were seeing a steady decline in Trap shooters and revenue. Fastest growing HS sport in MN, no injuries since it started. Hard to see a downside, particularly watching the 110 lb 5 ft 2 inch folks shooting their guns well. May even induce some folks to start hunting...

At my club's monthly meeting this month it was nothing but praise for the HS trap leagues. Yeah they have to order a trailer load of clays, and that's a lot of handling, but it's a net gain for the club. Also, it does drive membership at the club I belong to, the kids want to practice on non-league nights.

The club I belong to is still "open" (no waiting list, not insanely busy). A membership cap has been proposed but not yet implemented.

I saw this on the #4 last night.

It seems Big Lake H.S. won't allow the Trap Team to have their photo in the year book.

The team member's parents, should be camping in admins office. Their kids are being discriminated against, for their choice of sport, that is part of the schools sports. Maybe the kids should also picket the offices too. It's time we use the "Lefts" tactics on them! What goes around, comes around :wack:

MN Gun Owner's Caucus posted this on their FB page in regards to the photo SNAFU:

CALL BIG LAKE HIGH SCHOOL TODAY

Big Lake High School, reinforcing an ugly stereotype, has barred a team photo of the school's trap team from appearing in their yearbook because the kids are holding their trap shotguns in the photo.

Call and e-mail the school's leadership TODAY and ask them to reverse this ridiculous decision.

Athletic Director
Logan Midthun
l.midthun@biglakeschools.org
763-262-5114

Principal:
Bob Dockendorf
b.dockendorf@biglakeschools.org
763-262-5110

Superintendent
Steve Westerberg s.westerberg@biglakeschools.org
763-262-5218

Be polite, but firm. Be sure to call TODAY as the yearbook publication deadline is fast approaching!

Contact the school administrators and tell them what a misguided and terrible idea it is to have and enforce such a policy.
