how to carry a handgun in texas

Postby NinjaMonkey on Thu Feb 01, 2018 11:29 am

Hello me and some friends are trying to hog hunt in Texas but when i look at the ccw map from google I notice that Texas don't honor Minnesota ccw. Do anybody have experience with carrying a gun in Texas. What I need to do to lawfully carry a handgun in taxes.

(first time hunting. first time traveling to Texas.)

looks like you are out of luck- according to this link.

Texas does not recognize MN permits.

For all intents and purposes, you need a non-resident LTC from Texas or a state that TX honors (UT, AZ, and FL come to mind).

I'm not sure about the requirements for a TX permit, but AZ was pretty easy. IIRC, FL is pretty easy, too.

You are pretty much SOL without another states permit. Most instructors in MN also are good for at least one other state. Personally do FL because it covers the states we might do in winter TX, NM, AZ and back to home. Other than CO I don't have to steer clear of any states to or from.

Florida is easy to get - MN training cert, fingerprint card, passport photo...seems to me it was about $100 for a 7 year permit. Took a full 90 days to finally get it.

wow Florida state permit is nice but 90 days wait and a 100 dollar, that seem like the best route. i will continue to look for some other route to lawfully ccw there. but if not i will try to plan the trip in another state.
thanks for all the quick response!!!!!!!!!!

AZ is only $60 and turns them in 75 days. Finger print card, copy of your MN permit and a check. Good to go.

I did an AZ permit specifically for visiting Texas. I’m glad I did. AZ was easy, and I feel more likely to go to AZ than FL.

"...more likely to go to AZ than FL..."

With the FL permit, you can do both.
As to easy, there both pretty simple to acquire, and similar in cost.
For either, one must plan ahead.

how to carry a handgun in texas

I need to get off my ass and get the FL app done and sent in. I have it. Just haven’t gotten around to getting printed yet. Does anyone know if Dakota county does electronic prints or if they ink you?

I can't answer that, but I do know that you need to use the cards FL sends you, and follow their unique instructions.
I don't recall all the details, but I had no problem in Ramsey County. It seems to meet they scanned my fingers and printed the cards. I know it was different then the only other time I was fingerprinted, some 40+ years ago.

I'd bet Dakota Cty has done a few prints for FL, and know the drill.
