Mn Permits to Carry or who honers what?

Postby wasfuzz on Wed Mar 21, 2018 11:27 am

The following is the release today from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety regarding carry permit reciprocity.

--------------------------

March 20, 2018

Under Minnesota law, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is required to publish a list of states that have handgun carry permit laws that are not similar to Minnesota permit-to-carry law. Each year, DPS conducts a thorough and comprehensive review of the permit to carry laws of other states to determine whether they are similar to Minnesota law.

States with laws not similar to Minnesota Law (PERMITS NOT VALID IN MN):

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Caroline, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

Out-of-state Permits Valid in MN:

Alaska, Delaware, Idaho (ENHANCED ONLY), Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota (CLASS ONE ONLY), Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota (ENHANCED ONLY), West Virginia (REGULAR ONLY)

The West Virginia REGULAR permit has been added as a valid out-of-state permit because it requires a minimum age of 21 and mandates training that includes live-fire shooting.

Nevada has been withdrawn as a similar state because age 21 is no longer the minimum age for all permit applicants. Minnesota law requires all applicants to be at least 21 years old, without exception.

As directed by law, DPS will continue to annually review state laws governing the issuance of permits to carry weapons and will publish an updated list on its website each year. If you have questions, please call (651) 793-2616.

Sincerely,

(Signed)

Stanek really screwed us over on this, the first year the list came out, and we've never been able to fix it.

BSA is continuing to downcheck states for reasons that go well beyond the criteria specified in the statute.

Rich Stanek was Commissioner of Public Safety from 2003 to 2004, appointed by Tim Pawlenty, when the shall-issue bill was passed, and was head of the MN Department of Public Safety when the standards for recognition were set and the first list published.

Mn Permits to Carry or who honers what?

A very good little app for your smartphone is called, concealed carry laws, it's free and it shows state-by-state prohibited areas and who honors what state permits. For the guy on the go.

I've got several of the CCW apps and always wonder how accurate they are and how frequently they are updated. Of course, every one says to go to the Attorney General's site of the state in question. If I'm going to do that, what the heck do I need your (developer's) silly app for?

He's been quite fair with respect to carry permits as sheriff.

I jest got back from FL. And visiting in AL. And around, good luck with the State sights, never did find all the information I needed without the apps. and other carry sights. To tell the truth, only thing that I got from the State sights was what permits were honored for sure unless you want to spend the time reading and searching the laws of each state.
