What magazines are you using for 300blk?

Postby Jack's My dog on Wed Mar 28, 2018 8:34 am

Wondering what you guys are using for 300blk mags? I know you can use pretty much any 5.56 mag, but have you found any that seem to work better for all loads across the board, or does the load dictate the magazine? I messed around with a couple Hexmags, and the rounds really do not snap into place they way I would like them to. It looks like there are 300 blk specific Pmags which I am interested in trying once I can find one. I would also like to find a 10rd mag that works well for hunting purposes. While I love the idea of trolling some of my hunting buddies with a 40rd pmag, even 20/30 round mags seem like they may be a bit cumbersome when hunting from the ground, leaned up against a tree and trying to brace off my knees.

I agree with the mag size. I didn't go hi capacity for my latest Grendel build. I'm not a Mag Dump maniac, so they seem sort of silly for my purposes. I bought 5 and 10 round mags - should work well in the deer stand and any bench work I might want to do for accuracy. I guess I am not planning for the inevitable armed insurrection headed our way, so bad on me for not being a team player. Put me on over watch duties.

with 110-150 grain bullets I use any G.I. mag or Lancer, Magpul. Its generally only with bullets heavier than this where you have issues and could benefit from a 300AAC specific mag.= Lancer, Magpul, D&H, would be my choice

Aluminum 20 round older GI mags for both hyper and sub.

Used regular mags for 110 grain bullets without issues. Tried 150 grain and issues cropped up. Bought 5 300BO P-Mags and all is well with heavier bullets. Shooting Hornady 190 subs with the p-mags.

I just use standard PMAG Gen3 10rd and 20rd. Never had an issue with subs but I rarely shoot them and mostly use 150gr or less.

Thank you for the responses. I will probably not be shooting subs in the near future, but will keep an eye out for the 300blk pmags-I would like to get into to the sub game eventually. I think I might start with picking up a 10rd pmag and also testing my 20rd Pmag.

Anyone have any insight into if poly or GI style mags make more noise in the stand....Non-issue maybe?

This.
For the light weight supers (up to 150 grain) any stanag mag will work. I’ve never had a problem with magpul, fwiw. As the bullets get longer and heavier, some feeding problems can occur. If running subs, particularly 220gr missiles, I have encountered some feeding issues. My own testing says it’s more weight related than OAL. If I download a mag to say 20 rounds, the springs have enough pressure to feed properly. That’s been my experience. Much more than 20/22, and I don’t believe the springs are designed to push up bullets that weigh 4 times the amount they were originally designed for. Magpul created 300blk specific mags that delete the internal rib/seam that allow unfettered feeding. I’ll admit I haven’t bought/tested any. But if they haven’t designed different springs, they’d be ineffective for subsonic rounds, IMO. If anyone has different experiences, I’d love to hear it.

Edit to address the 40 round pmags- I own some and are a no go with 300blk, IMO. Way too much weight when filled to capacity, no matter the grain weight of the projectile. I own only 3, but have had poor performance with all 3.

Good information. I'm just finishing a 300BLK build.

Where's a good place to get caliber specific Lancers or PMags? I haven't found them online - everyone is out of stock online.

I shoot mostly 220gr subs out of regular pmags and I've never had one failure to feed.

Lancers just came out ;) at the 2018 Shot Show, so they are going to be tough to find. D&H is another good option- they are one in the same as LaBelle G.I. magazines. Palmetto armory mags are also made by D&H from what I understand.

I never realized there was an issue. I thought that was the benefit to 300BO, no new mags.
