Going to the range at 18

Postby AndrewK on Wed Jul 18, 2018 6:30 am

I just Turned 18 and my buddies wanted to go to the gun range it just was a bit weary about transporting guns to the range. I know I can possess rifles and shotguns I'm just wondering about the legality of transporting handguns and "assault rifles" since I cant buy them but I wanted to take my dads I just don't want to get in trouble with the law if I get pulled over for whatever reason on the way there

Thanks

AFAIK, as long as you are not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm, you should be OK. The law only addresses PURCHASE, not possession.

A couple other tidbits...
  • You can legally purchase an MSR from FFLs at 18. However, you will need a PTP.
  • You can legally purchase handguns from private parties at 18.
  • That said, getting a PTP at 18 can be problematic. Many police departments are loath to issue permits to anyone under 21, even though the law allows them to stamp the permit indicating that it is valid for long gun purchases only.

One last caveat:
  • I am not a lawyer
  • The advice you receive here is worth what you paid for it

You also can't rely on any officer you may encounter to know the law. Be safe.

Also... while owning a handgun is legal at 18 in MN... you may run into trouble purchasing handgun ammo at 18, as it is restricted to 21 and up.

Keep them unloaded and cased when transporting and you are legal. Be safe and have fun.
