Prone at OGC?

Postby jdege on Wed Sep 19, 2018 1:19 pm

So, I just finished my first Appleseed, and it's clear I need some practice.

I'm a member at OGC, and while prone is not allowed during public shooting, AIUI it's fine otherwise.

I don't, though, think I've ever seen anyone shooting prone, at OGC. I know they must, during the military rifle competitions, but I've never seen anyone shooting prone in individual practice.

Appleseed uses 25 yd targets, and I don't see much reason in working at longer ranges until I resolve my issues at 25. (I'm shooting nice, tight groups, about one time in three, and crap the rest of the time.)

As I see it, I have several choices for shooting prone at 25 yds - shoot from the line at the 25 or the right side of the comp range, or move out on the grass on the 50, 100, or the left side of the comp range.

How do people usually practice prone, at OGC?

That's about all I do, unless I just stop by to foul a barrel.
Where the benches move, I move them, but I'm usually on the 200M; there, I lay between them.
On most ranges, I like to position myself to make it very obvious I am laying there...I usually set up near the center, so no one can miss me if they should decide to go down range.
Most people aren't looking for shooters on the ground.
The only problems I've found is the concrete is usually quite dusty/ dirty in a way that's hard to sweep up.

I also stay on the concrete, usually just pushing the benches apart enough for me to lay between them. I use a padded shooting mat, so the dirt doesn't bother me.
I'm shooting an appleseed next month, maybe I should go practice a bit, hmmmmm.
Remember, gun control is not about guns, it's about control.

Why would you guys want to shoot prone when OGC has perfectly good shooting benches? :cogitating:

It's hard to nap on a bench.

Simple. I want to practice from different positions.
Seated, kneeling, prone.
Supine, too, maybe.

Any idea which range would easiest to rig a bar for my inversion boots?

OldmanFCSA proved this is just a fallacy. He fell asleep while sitting at the bench, resting his head on his rifle. A fellow shooter (one of our female youth competitors) woke him up just before firing began, so he would put his ear muffs on. :cogitating:

Standing? Yes.

Hanging by my heels from the rafters? Why not?
