The Marine in that photo was First Sergeant Brad Kasal (since promoted to Sergeant Major), who received the Navy Cross for his actions.

Read his book and find out: "My Men Are My Heroes" by SgtMajor Brad Kasal (USMC)

Badass. Gun is also decocked and safety appears to be on. I was a PMI for a while in the Marines (9 month or so full-time collateral duty from my regular gig) and worked both the rifle and pistol ranges. We hammered safety home above all else; marksmanship always came second.
