The end reminds me of people saying a 30-30 win is a good brush gun (not due to it's convenient size and maneuverability). Maybe it was only a common thing to tell others in northern Minnesota? Maybe they can blow through brush...but a watermelon deflecting a projectile that big so much....wow!

That was my experience. I carried a Winchester model 94 for 10 years when I was a kid, thinking t could shoot through brush.

I liken the artillery shell deflecting off a watermelon to skipping it off water.

I still wonder about shooting through brush - it that was an accurate comparison.

Any of you guys ever done target shooting through light/ medium/ heavy brush vs a clear range to test the theory?

Good point. Target shooting seems to always be clear line of sight environments.

I'll admit to shooting at a deer out of a box blind and not having the muzzle clear of the window sill although I had a clear view through the scope. Pulled the trigger, missed the deer and hada shower of wood splinters. I can attest to the fact that 30-06 rounds are not effective when fired through a 2x2. :o

Years ago, one of the gun rags had an article testing bullet deflection. As I recall they used a board with multiple rows of wooden dowels. Pictures of the dowels showed how quickly the bullets destabilized.

I remember that too. I think it is just luck of the draw.

The tank video was cool. Really interesting to see the bullet yaw.

I was shooting .308 at 100 yards once, paper target.Through my reticle I could see what looked like a twig around halfway-ish down range. I could only see it clearly when I adjusted the parallax knob. I was hitting the target each shot, but one shot never even hit the paper. That was the one that hit the twig.
