Getting people interested in long range shooting

Postby yukonjasper on Mon Jan 25, 2021 10:32 am

I found this article interesting as it talks about the parallels in heavy/traditional calibers used in long range shooting and small bore equivalent options.

I know we have some talented and experienced long range shooters here, so interested in their perspectives.

I like the lower entry costs and the approachability with shorter ranges as key for me.

I've never shot ELR, but 200yd Smallbore is a gas. The closest thing to shooting 1,000yds without a 1,000yd range.

I will never apologize for being an American.

On a side note, one of the guy's at Mpls Rifle Club last Saturday was complaining about all the new ELR 22 guys snapping up all the upper end 22 ammo.

I imagine the lack of "rolling your own" takes some of the magic out of the process.

What is considered the gold standard for. 22 ammo?

Rush Lake Range up near New York Mills has been hosting some NRL22 matches. It does look like fun.

Here's an overview. Run time 10:17

Here's a rifle to drool over. Run time 20:13

Directly from the article you linked...

Lapua Center-X is the gold standard for tactical precision rimfire matches.

So, just that one specific round? No wonder it is in high demand.

The "Gold Standard"? That's a deep rabbit hole to go down. The top smallbore shooters in the world will not only look for specific brands, they look for specific lot numbers.

Yeah, every rifle is going to shoot different ammo differently. You can't load your own, so you are basically doing load development by trying various lots. Center-X is good stuff, but it may or may not be the best performing ammo out of any given barrel. It's not even the top of the Lapua line, it's just considered a good compromise of performance and value. I brought my rifle to the Lapua Test Center a few years ago, and tested something like 20 different lots of Lapua, SK and Wolf ammo, including my own stuff that I brought down for comparison. I fully expected to drop a lot of money on a case of Midas, but much to my delight a lot of Center-X outperformed everything else that they had. That saved me almost $600 on the quantity I bought.

Generally speaking, more expensive ammo will shoot better than the cheap stuff.

He may be onto something with that. In previous droughts, you could always find the mid and upper-grade rimfire ammo at pretty much normal prices. It's pretty much all gone this time.

In my humble opinion, shooting a .22 at 200 yards is about comparable to shooting a good .308 at 1000. I think it's actually a little harder at the range that Mark posted about above, that may be mainly because there is just no good way to observe the wind from the firing line. The 2 flags are in completely useless locations, and the mirage that can be seen is not very reliable. My 1000-yard .308 scores are generally better than my 200-yard .22 scores, at least at that club. As far as I know, I still have the only 200 ever fired with a .22 on that target in MN...

I should have just posted this all in one reply, but whatever.

Every barrel is different, and not all barrels like the same ammo. You need to get a few different options and go to the range and find yours.
