Would gun owners really be OK with this?

Ran across this: The Gun Solution
Never let it be said that gun owners don't have a solution. We know the solution. Here it is.

He has a compromise he thinks gun owners would support:

  • Removing short-barrelled rifles and shotguns from NFA
  • Removing suppressors from NFA
  • Adding bump stocks to NFA
  • Repealing assault weapons bans
  • Repealing magazine capacity limits
  • Repealing handgun age requirements
  • Repealing trafficking prohibitions
  • Repealing junk gun laws
  • Repealing "stand your ground" restrictions
  • Adding violent misdemeanors to NICS
  • Creating a Universal Background Check system that simply runs background checks, and does not involve any information about the firearms being transfered

So, as a compromise, would you find this acceptable?

Shall not be infringed.

Thought I would get that out there.

That's a nice catch phrase, but that ship sailed dang near a century ago. Personally, I don't trust any "compromise" on existing law unless there's some provision that the agreement cannot be modified and no new laws introduced for 50 years.

The only thing I'd have an issue with would be the provisions of the background check.

If there was any way to determine whether a background check had been run on any given firearm, I'd oppose it.

I'm assuming you want to remove suppressors from the NFA, instead of to it.

I'd be ok with it all except the violent misdemeanors part.

The anti's would never go for it. But you already kew that.

Yep. cut-and-paste error.

I'd be fine with adding violent misdemeanors, if we removed non-violent felonies, and we were clear about what constituted violence.

But as you said, the antis would never go for it.

They don't want a world without violence, they don't want a world without guns, they want a world without gun owners.

You might be able to convince me if we did that. Maybe...

Ok, since we are playing fantasy land here. Here is my comprise. The anti’s get to move to whatever country they feel is better than the United States and leave me and my guns the eff alone.

I think you and I might be able to agree on something that provided a reasonable balance between concerns, but I'm pretty sure that nothing you or I found acceptable would be acceptable to the anti's.

No matter how logical of a 'compromise' it seems to be, it will never work, as noted above. The folks who are emotional and react with grief and anger after every (well, every non-gangbanger) incident of violence that involves a gun will never stop grasping at straws to fix the problem. And they don't acknowledge that the problem is actually the bad people who have become OK with committing violence against others and not the tool they use. So no matter how many boxes we checked today for them with this proposed legislation when the next awful event happens they will want more.

The best path forward that we have to move anti-gunners to stop seeking ineffective but burdensome laws is to repeatedly carry the message forward that it is the culture and the bad people that need to change. It's hard. It's a monumental, society-changing effort that's like using an oar to steer a container ship but it is the only thing that will eventually reduce violence. If we don't try to fix the people we're resigned to forever fighting the antis. So at every chance you get when you engage an anti try to make this point. The bad people will always do harm regardless of the tool so fix the bad people/culture.

As mentioned MANY times it isn't even about gun control it's about CONTROL. Keep snipping away at rights until they are gone.
