Interesting take on gun rights

Postby Lumpy on Wed Mar 30, 2022 8:32 pm

This YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1iQUF1gQm makes an interesting case about the origins of USA gun rights. The author argues that America almost uniquely was built around colonization by private land owners who used guns first and foremost to defend their property rights. And that a long-term trend away from home, farm, and business ownership and towards apartment dwelling wage laborers is reflected in America's rural/urban divide on gun ownership, and bodes ill for this traditional foundation of American firearms culture.

During that time period, most of the European nations started limiting private ownership of "arms". We know this was in the minds of founding fathers from the correspondence among them. Owning arms of any type was limited to aristocrats. The idea was to give a common man same rights as those enjoyed by the wealthy and powerful in Europe.

I never saw 2A as anything to do with protecting your homestead. I always felt that 2A was about having the same rights as the government.

So apartment dwellers do not get to defend their homes? Oh, right, socialism, got it.

Sounds to me like there are a bunch of city dwellers that are currently rethinking their need for firearms.
